can any one tell me what the H icon on my screen is for and why are there arrows facing down?

That is the HSDPA icon, arrows indicating it's active, which is a good thing.

Oh thank you so much I thought I was using up my internet usage when i wasnt on it if that makes sense

There are several apps available in Market which monitor and report data usuage; NetCounter comes to mind, NetSentry, etc.

3G watchdog is a very good app with monitering your net use as well, you can tailor it to actually tell you how much of your monthly net balance you are using so it can warn you when your close to your limit, or whenever you want really....its also in widget form too so great to slap on a homescreen

oh and the arrows indicate download and upload data usage
