Had a scare with my SG2

Was on our deck grilling some burgers and had my phone on a table along with cold beverages. :D My wife wanted the umbrella up over the table so I obliged. Within 5 minutes, a gust of wind came along and blew the table over. Drink glasses smashed and I saw my phone, face down, and WET! In a panic, I retrived the phone and dried it off but all was not well. The phone was showing that it was charging when in fact, nothing was plugged into it. Also, it keep waking the screen. I tried all the usual stuff, rebooting, batt pull, etc, no luck. My son believed it was a water issue and convinced me to put the phone in a bag of rice overnight. Rice did not change the phone so I did more Google searching and kept running into advice to use a toothbrush in the charging port. While I was doing this, I was thinking to myself, "this is a waste of time" but it amazingly, it worked! One more odd thing that happened was the drop turned off the proximity sensor so on calls, the screen stayed lit? Was an easy fix in settings but still odd. I am hoping this episode is over but have not had to charge the phone since this happened and pray sticking the charger in the port does not bring the condition back.

Not having my phone while it sat in that bag of rice for a night was torture! :mad:

I know how hard it is to feel complete without your phone. I have been there.:(

Just so you know, your son was right, but overnight is not long enough to dry out the phone. It needs to be at least 48 hours, but 72 is better. Even the smallest bit of moisture in the wrong place can make your phone go haywire and when it does you run the risk of causing permanent damage.

It's human nature to try and turn your phone on after a dunking to see if it still works, but that is usually the worst thing you can do. In the future, if your phone goes swimming again, immediately pull the battery, sim card and SD card (if you have one) Dry it off as best you can and put it in the bag of uncooked rice. If it's humid where you are, it will most likely require all of the 72 hours.

BTW, the reason why the toothbrush thing worked was you had shorted the charging contacts and brushing it dispersed the bubble of residual moisture.

Very good info to know. Still amazes me how compressed air couldn't remove the bubble but the toothbrush did? Tonight the phone will require charging. I hope accessing that port with the charger doesn't being back the issue.

I think you should do the rice thing for a long time like lunatic59 said before you charge it.
 
Fone charged without a hitch last night. I know there is no guaranty that a problem still could arise but I am hopeful and OH SO CAREFUL with that charging port! :D
 
Same thing happened to mine. Brush, compressed air didn't fix it. Used a pipe cleaner dipped in alcohol and carefully cleaned out crud in there. Think water created a mix with the crud already accumulated in there to form a conductive bridge across contacts.

The exposed charging port is one of my few dislikes about phone. But I figured out an easy way to protect port. I have a black tpu case on it. So I put a 1" strip of black electrical tape on it, starts at edge of case then goes down the back. Pretty invisible, just Peel the front up a bit to charge, then cover port back up. Port has zero crud in it since then, despite me pocket carrying.
