Root had to sbf. what did I do wrong?

I was on Miui 1.9.30 and was trying to update to Miui 1.10.7. I somehow screwed up and my DX couldn't reboot into CWM recovery. Every time I tried to update ROM or reboot using ROM manager or manually reboot it'll restore Miui 1.9.30 and force me to go through setup (login to Google account etc.) over and over. Finally I SBF back to .602 and now it's OK.

I'm kind of a newbie and am curious what I did wrong to cause this. In Miui I first tried to install and run Droid2 bootstrap. Was that the problem? I should have just used ROM manager? Thanks.

Yes that was your problem. Never try to use any of the bootstrappers on a 2nd init Rom. You will break the init and have to SBF the phone. Next time you want to update your Rom follow the directions supplied with said Rom.

And remember NEVER use droid bootstrappers on 2nd init. Use ClockWorkMod recovery instead. And be sure you install CWM as a 2nd init.

Thanks!

Is there any thread or site that explains how these things work together in more depth and details? Mostly I see guides that shows step by step how to do things but I don't see much of anything that actually explains the basic concept, like what a bootloader or ROM actually is, and why you have to use a special method to install ROM based on certain kernel, etc.
