Help Handcent issues in ICS?

I have ZERO lag... just the blank pattern screen...

That is odd...you could try reinstalling and/or wiping cache. Also, when you get the pop up window when you're already in the phone (ie past the lock screen), do all of your apps & widgets disappear as well? I'm sure you would have mentioned this if it was happening, but it can't hurt to ask.

A good test would be to try another messaging app to see if their pop up window makes your lockscreen transparent. If so, there's something wrong in your OS settings. If not, then it's just the app. :)

No, Viebroccoli, the phone performs normally in any other circumstance. The ONLY issue is if I get a popup while not logged in. It's the only time the pattern "disappears".

I guess I can clear cache in Handcent, but not data (too many valuable texts). It's not a catastrophic problem here, just a nuisance but I WOULD like to resolve it...

EDIT: Clearing cache did NOT resolve it...

Give another messaging app a try then. When you see what happens to your lockscreen when you get a pop up window of another messaging app, that will be a big indicator of how to solve your problem. Of course, you'll want to uninstall Handcent to make sure Handcent has no interference with the other app's pop up window.
