Handcent SMS

Why do you guys use this app? I didn't see anything wrong with the HTC SMS app. Handcent uses ads (not a fan of that) and the bubble chat thing reminds me of iPhone.

Don't we have HTC's because they're better than the iPhone?

Customization is why I use it. I can make notification icons whatever color I want per person, I can color code everything... just more customization options than the stock messaging app affords me.

More customizable is why I use it and make husband too. If you don't like the iphone bubbles change it, the is an option to do the regular list style. That's the lovely feature of android, you can change almost everything you dont like.

To change it, menu-settings-custom style-bubble settings - conversation style

Hi,

I recently installed Handcent version 3.9.5 and am seeing two new buttons that are annoying the heck out of me for being there LOL.

I've attached a screenshot with the two buttons circled in red.

The top right one is a Recipient Manager which is redundant because the green button next to it is your contacts list to click on to enter who to send the text message to.

The bottom middle button brings up a new box that has a smiley face, audio, pic attachment links on the top and then an area to enter text and a send or cancel button. I do not understand why this is here??

I should also state I am using Cyanogen Mod 7.

Thanks for any suggestions as to how to remove these.

I don't know about the blue one but for that bottom arrow thing. To remove it it's menu-settings-custom style -bubble settings -scroll down show full editor arrow and disable

Great! Worked like a charm! Thanks so much...One down...one to go! lol

Well you can press menu-more-report bugs and suggestions, and then suggest they remove the pointless button. Lol

Basically the blue button is to edit the list of names you add from using the green button. Like of you changed your mind about including someone on a text you tap the blue button and uncheck their name. At least that is the only time I used the blue button.

Arrrghhh... Found another reason to dislike Handcent. After uninstall an album called 'skinicon' was found in my gallery. It has like 8 thumbnails pics. Does this mean Handcent did not uninstall correctly?

I uninstalled Handcent by going to manage applications and clicked Handcent and then it had the option to uninstall.

It uninstalled but your gallery saved the thumbnails from the app. Just delete that and you won't get it back. I had a similar folder appear when i downloaded handcent themes and when i got rid of the themes I still had the thumbnails in my gallery so i deleted the folder.

I deleted the thumbnails and then the folder went away. Thanks!

The odd thing is that this folder seemed to show up after the sideload update.

I've used Handcent since the G1. At the time, it was miles ahead of the stock app. I still use it now on my Nexus 1 and my Inspire. I just personally find it more aesthetically pleasing and more functional.

Everyone has opinions. Everyone has preferences. Some people prefer blur, some prefer sense. Some (like me) prefer stock android. I hate Blur, but I wouldn't ask someone else why they use it. You prefer the stock app, so you use it. I, like others, prefer Handcent. Some prefer Chomp. Some don't text at all. It's their prerogative. Having options to replace the stock apps is never a bad thing. That's why the market's there.

EDIT: Also, the only time I've seen ads are on the settings screen. It's a free app, and the ads aren't intursuve (to me). I'd gladly drop a few bucks on a quality app, which Handcent is. I personally don't have HTC because it's better than iPhone. I use Android itself because I find it better than iOS and is more suitable for me. I prefer HTC phones over other manufacturers, but the build quality on the iPhone 4 was the best on any phone I've owned. HTC would be a close second. My Handcent is set up like the iOS bubbles. Thats just my preference, Messaging on the iPhone app was top notch. And if I ever wanted to switch the look on Handcent, the choice is readily available.

I like Handcent a lot - and I like the option to have a popup box when an SMS comes in. I don't think you can do that with the HTC one. When the box comes up, I can reply immediately within that box. The customizations are really great.

You can get an app called sms popup that will work with the stock text app.
