Handcent vs. SMS Popup

Can anybody tell me how one is better than the other? At the risk of sounding very 'Apple', I want something that just works. Its funny how if you search enough for app reviews you always find somebody who has bad experiences.

If you uninstall either of these apps, do they uninstall clean and put everything back to the way it was? *default messaging app*

I use SMS. I like it. Best thing about that feature vs stock app is the fact you can personalize the threads. Nothing worse than talking to two little hawties at the same time (plan a and plan b) and realize you sent the wrong text to the wrong girl

With SMS, you can put personal pictures for each contact to be the background image of their chat bubble.

I now know I'm sending a text to girl a because I see her picture there.

Plus, you can do popup notifications....



just be sure, when you install a second app, to turn off all notifications on the one you don't use, or you get 2 notifications for the one message.

Your always going to find someone who would complain that their supermodel girlfriend wants to have sex too often. Some people will live every day of their lives with a half full glass and even when they get a full glass it will be the wrong beverage. Dont read too much into complaints unless they are specific, ie "I installed your app A but it conflicted with app B and I had to uninstall". That might be worth knowing if you have app B, "this app sucks, blow me", is not particularly helpful. When the latter is weighed against a dozen 5 star ratings you get back to where I started, some people will always complain no matter how good things are.

I have used both and like both but I like handcent because it works better when you have the lockscreen disabled.

Ooh, subjective answer alert!
How would you define 'better' ? If you tell us what is it that you are in need of, then we could target your explicit needs with our suggestions. There are an astonishing amount of distinct features in even a 'simple' text messaging app...

I use SMS. I like it. Best thing about that feature vs stock app is the fact you can personalize the threads.

I haven't ever used anything other than Handcent (so I am not dissing anything) but I just want to say that Handcent can also do global as well as thread-level theming, with pictures from Contacts.
Again, I haven't tried any others, but the new-message popup from Handcent is quite nice, with instant reply functionality.

Well, for one thing, they all use the same database -- so if you wanted to, you could manage your text messages with severall apps that are installed side-by-side. Uninstalling an app does NOT delete your messages, but you may see a couple of "perform action with which app?" popups for a while.

I am going to guess that a higher % of respondents will list Handcent. I have used both and decided upon SMS Popup. I had a few glitches with Handcent, more annoyances than major issues. I feel like the SMS is slightly more straightforward and reliable but Hancent has more customization options. Both good choices.

My main thrust between the two would be reliability. I have no problem w/ the stock messaging app, but so many people are using Handcent or SMS Pop that I feel like I'm missing out on something.

I haven't tried SMS Popup, but I have used, and love Handcent SMS and is the one I will be putting on my EVO, and put it on all my friends phones

if you dont read this carefully enough, it makes it sound like plan b is a boy
