It seems to be tablets (well, some tablets) that is the issue rather than the ROM, judging by the comment in the description: "Rest assured Hangouts will be available soon for all Android 2.3+ devices, tablets included!"

Perhaps the large-screen tablet layouts were not finalised at the time of release, who knows. Give it time.

PS: most Nexus 7's can't be "carrier bound" - no carrier exists to bind unless you have a 3G version :-)

No, it's already been installed, it just replaces Talk. When I go to the store it only gives me the option to open the app, but the app still has the old icon, which is weird.

It automatically updated my talk over to hangouts on my Nexus 7. Don't know why you would get a compatibility issue

That was the day it was released, I was "upgraded" to hangouts yesterday.

Indeed, as did my Nexus 7 yesterday. It updated ages ago on my Nexus 4.

On thinking about it I suspect it was just one of Google's common ploys of staggering major releases by device and region presumably to spread server loads over time, much like they did with the recent Play Store release.

Mine asked to update and I did not update it right away, as I was not sure I wanted the new version, then I installed it on my old phone for a few days. Once tested for a few days I installed in on the N7 and no issues.

Did yours do it straight away?
