Root Happy Birthday me!!CT 3.3 how to!!

DaisFlaque

Android Expert
Okay Its officially my birth day and I asked for a new ROM from a few friends, all but a few that have the Prevail have told me that CT is the way to go... I took about all of yesterday to flash it correctly so I figured I would post my trials and errors. So here goes...
I down loaded PREVAIL_M820_FA19_Rooted_CWM, flash that ( must have all drivers ), link here( PREVAIL_M820_FA19_Rooted_CWM.zip ), next You have to download CT-Mod 3.3 Link here ( CTMod3.3.zip ) {MAKE SURE YOU PUT THIS IN THE ROOT/BASE OF YOUR SD-CARD}, next boot into CWM { volume up and power until you see a MOS-DOS type scheme } go to Install Zip From SdCard { using your volume keys}, hit your camera button to select, find the CTMod Zip and hit camera again... Here's where things get tricky so pay attention... okay it should start installing the ROM than the Kernel, next go to advanced ( if you are into tons of Internal space ) and hit partition sdcard choose appropriate size for your internal and hit okay/camera, next it will ask for a swap size ( always a 0MB ) and hit okay. After this is done you have your new ROM. hit power until it brings you back to reboot system now and okay/camera. Now if you just leave it this way it will still have a huge effect on your space ( but you cant see it ) so here's how to see what your working with...
After reboot go to play store and download ES File Explorer ( personal favorite, just make sure you can give it Root Privileges) ( P.S. ES File explorer has a built in script reader and it does this trick w/o problems ) Okay once done open ES and go to its settings and enable root and mount internal as writable. Once done find internal in ES and go to system, find Koumamod ( usually at the end of page ) open as text, it should ask you what program to open with choose the ES blah blah and remove the #. "simply remove the # from in front of the line for the mount option you want.
"data" = sd-ext as the entire /data partition and
"SSM" = sd-ext as /data/app with optional sd-swap as /data/dalvik-cache" Thanks to bloodawn, kuoumajutsu, Hroark13, and all the others for this wonderful work of art!!!

So I have been having problems getting this done. Install of ct3.3 went well and so did kouma 2.2 but I'm having trouble with the memery part. I partitioned card. No change. I read instructions in koumas thread. But it didn't say to look n file explorer. So after some digging around Ii found what he was talk about. Found koumamod and was going to continue with the process but when I opened it up the 3 lines he talked about weren't n there. I then found this thread and tried es file explorer and followed your instructions. But when I open up koumamod it just says application not available. I'm stuck.

do it without koumakernel 2.2

The best way I've found to take CTMod all the way :D

Use Odin to flash the Rooted Gingerbread with CWM image
http://androidforums.com/galaxy-pre...ock-factory-updated-02-23-new-fa19-image.html

Boot Phone up

Go to Settings then Storage

Unmount SD card then Format (Back up Everything on your SD card, this will fully erase the entire thing!!)

Copy CTMod 3.3 onto SD Card

Boot phone into Recovery

Factory reset/wipe user data

Go to advanced wipe dalvik cache

Install Ctmod 3.3 from zip
http://androidforums.com/galaxy-pre...432614-rom-gb-2-3-6-ctmod-3-3-03-17-12-a.html

Then Partition SD card

Set size to whatever you want (I use 1024 personally)

Set swap size to 0

Exit Recovery and fully boot ctmod

Copy KoumaKernel 2.2 to SD Card

Boot back into Recovery

Probably not totally necessary but just to keep it clean i like to factory reset and wipe dalvik cache again

Intall KoumaKernel 2.2 (Would stay away from the OC, overclock kernel until you are experienced)
http://androidforums.com/galaxy-pre...kernel-gb-koumakernel-2-2-overclock-test.html

Boot system Fully

I go to market and download ES File Explorer (its free and its my favorite :))

Open ES and hit Menu then Settings

Enable Root Explorer

Mount /system as writable

Longpress on Favorites to access Internal /

Go to System folder

Koumamod is at the bottom

Open as text

Remove # from in front of setprop ... mount /data

Hit menu save

Back out of koumamod

Settings unmount /system

Reboot!

:D:D

At this point you can boot back into Recovery if you want to flash a Theme for CTMod 3.3 but you definitely need to wipe dalvik cache and the cache partition before installing your theme

I apologize if this is out of line just trying to fully condense it. :D
Have already set multiple phones up in this exact way, all of them are stable and have massive storage for apps

I had that problem .. okay when you open the zip (Koumamod) in /system/koumamod open the file with Es Note Editor. If that don't work download 7z in playstore. That should do it.

Edit thanks imonster I didn't catch that ... yeah don't even download kk2.2 till after these instructions..... And yeah I'm 95% sure its that for some reason your file explorer doesn't have the zip reader ... or your picking the wrong opener.

but I'm having trouble with the memery part. I partitioned card. No change....
How many partitions do you have? Make sure you have formatted the sd from your settings/storage/unmount than after it unmounts the option for format will appear. This un-do's the previous partitions/dividers in your sd allowing for new "rooms" to be made.

P.S. Just like everything in life if at first you don't succeed... destroy everything that failed and start from scratch. I say try again "exactly" described Odin/Format/CTMod/flash/partition/re-write#:D

P.S.S. When you go to open the file as text what happens? Does it give you an option to open it with...? if not than dl some zipper file opener/reader.oh yeah and it won't show a diff. until reboot after the # is removed. Plus when you do get it open try to remove the # sign with your phone 'sideways'. Otherwise it seems like three or four lines..(This confused me at first).

Here's the code for 2.4. Still called Koumamod

on koumamod # Default Internal /data partition. Comment this line to disable mounting of the internal /data (not recommended)

#(add the "pound" here) mount ext4 /dev/stl13 /data rw noatime nosuid nodev barrier=0 data=writeback nobh nodiratime noauto_da_alloc # Mount SD-EXT as /data partition (KoumaKernel 1.2 style) Uncomment this line to activate this mode

Now I'm stuck at the kk 2.4 screen on startup :(
Edit: Reinstalled the kernel from cwm. It now boots fine. Are those the right files I need to comment and un comment?

yeah I'm not even going to read all that.. get into your file expert, hit the button outside the screen that looks like two lines inside of a box. that will give you an option to set root and mount. Back almost all the way out, hit system , scroll down, and hit koumamod. Take the file and erase the # sign next to the one it says to.

Edit, when I say 'take' I mean hit open with file expert, and you should be able to click on the # sign and load up your keyboard, than simply hit the erase button like a text.

Edit, this tutorial is for 2.3 or 2.2, I haven't had the time yet to update. Should have a working update by the third.

This is a copy of mine only 2 things to change they are highlighted, so you don't have to read the whole thing This part is only for Koumakernel 2.4

The "pound" # makes the line act like its not there hence its a "comment"

Make sure you don't change anything else

Followed this EXACTLY and my phone got stuck at the red kouma kernel screen. :( Reflashed it and I'm back up and running.

How long was it stuck? First boot is long because it has to move everything to the sd-ext partition. Are you running ctmod? Would you post before and after copies of the koumamod file. Definitely do my best to help you
