You'd have to have a pretty poor computer for it to impact your web speeds. Unless, of course, your computer is full of malware. As for the internet connection, location matters much, much, more than speed past standard dsl speeds. I have a decent 12mbps connection, but my average ping to google servers is 50ms. BTW, their twitter announced this contest and I'd say 90%+ of their posts within a second of them going up. Today 2 posts were announced several minutes on twitter before they showed up on the front page as well.

Yeah i noticed that too. I kinda wished that happened with the contest. But then again, people would complain about the website lagging behind.

So many people complain (myself included) about the first to post contests. But if they actually won, would they complain still? I know i wouldn't, i would be jumping around the room yellin:

YEAHHHH YEAHHH! EAT THAT LOSERS! YEEAHHHH! WHOS THE MAN! WHOS THE MAN! IM THE MAN! BOOYAA! GIMMY MY GNEXY!

So really, maybe i will continue to compete in the speed contests just for the adrenalin rush. I makes my heart hurt, but sure does feel good :D

I never complained about the first to post contests. I actually debated with people who thought they were unfair on several occasions. I feel that they're probably my best chance to win as I had half a week off to study for finals and then actual finals before winter break. I'm not very good with the creative contests and the luck contests are just that, purely luck. Many of the creative contests so far require a secondary camera/camcorder, which I don't have. As luck would have it, I managed to win today's contest!
