Hard Bricked Samsung Galaxy S2

DatJerk

Lurker
I recently flashed a new ROM on my phone, but now it won't even start.
I've tried everything I know. Unplug the charger and pull battery, reinsert battery and try to go into recovery mode, and just plain trying to boot it. I deserve all the dumbs, but I just need help.

Any help would be appreciated!

My mom will shit bricks if she finds out I screwed my phone.

If you can get it into download mode, you can flash a new kernel with recovery. From there it's easy.

With the phone off, hold and press the vol. up and down buttons and plug in the USB cable. Use the original cable if you have it. You should see a warning about flashing custom firmware. Press vol. up to confirm.

If this doesn't work, you'll need the jig NoMoreSymbian linked you to, or if you want, you can make one. I've got a little how-to here.

Did you have clockworkmod installed?

If so, you should have been prompted to back up your files. I had an issue where my phone was stuck in a "boot loop" between the stock firmware and cyanogenmod boot screens. Try this.

1. Hold up and down on your volume while pressing the power button.
2. A menu should pop up giving you a bunch of options. Use your volume buttons to scroll to back up and restore.
3. Use the power button to select back up and restore and then scroll to back up from internal SD.
4. It should go to an android bot with a box and an arrow and a bunch of code, dont worry about that.
5. Wait a few minutes and it should reboot as normal.;)

Have to bring this thread up, because I face a similar problem. Is there anything I can do, my phone is pretty much DEAD.

This is what happened:

I rooted my phone using instructions found on these forums (can't post links) Everything went well, I got my phone rooted. I then tried to install Jelly Bean ROM, using instructions here:

[Can't post links, but if you Google Samsung Galaxy S2 Jelly Bean ROM, you can find it. It's Android Geeks -website]

I got to the point where I had to select the ROM I want to install -> I selected it, left the phone on the table and after few minutes it shut down and is now dead. I can't get to recovery mode, I can't get to download mode. It's complitely dead.

Battery didn't run out, before I started the ROM install it was on 90% + I had the charger in place.

Welcome to Android Forums Sappher.

Sorry it had to be under such adverse conditions.

Let's start with the basics. Take the batter out and let it sit for ten or 15 minutes to make sure any residual charge is dissipated. This is probably overkill, but better safe, etc. When you replace it, can you turn on the phone? Don't try to boot into recovery just yet.

If it turns on, what exactly happens? If not try plugging it in to a charger (not a USB port on a PC). Do you get any indication it's charging?

It could just be that your battery failed at the most inopportune time. If you know anyone with a phone like yours you could ask to try their battery, or take it into a store and see if they will try it for you.

If that doesn't do it ... I'd be looking for a new phone. BTW, I doubt the failed flashing was the cause. Even if a flash fails you should still be able to get into download mode or at least get the screen to come on.

Thank you for the fast reply!

I have tried taking the battery out and letting it sit a while, and then boot. Still, nothing happenes..

If I plug in the charger, nothing happenes, but the phone does get warm, so it seems it is charging.

Are battery failures common with this phone? I have at least one friend that I know of, who has the same phone... Could try to contact him and try with his battery I guess.

I find it pretty weird aswell, that flashing a new ROM would brick the device... Do ROM's even touch the bootloaders and stuff? Of course, I voided my warranty when I rooted the phone... Would be very... err, unpleasent if it decided to broke down about an hour later :P

I haven't found many similar stories similar to mine, where the phone is completely dead.. Many have bootloops and stuff, but from those you usually recover by reflashing I guess.. Not sure if anything is going to help me :(

Battery failures aren't common to many phones, but they do happen. Still if your phone is not responding when plugged it it seems that battery might not be the issue. If the screen is completely black and nothing from any of the buttons will do anything, you have a dead device, which isn't the same as bricked.

Flashing a new rom certainly could cause problems, but it wouldn't kill a phone with no response whatsoever. It could be that your screen has failed. Have you tried calling your own number? Press the power button like you would truning on the phone normally and wait a minute or two, then try calling the number. If it goes to voicemail right away that means the phone is off the network. If it rings for a while and then goes to voicemail, I would guess your phone is on, but can't provide any display.

In any case, if you phone is still under warranty, I'd take it in.

Okay, thanks for your responses. Nothing seems to work, so I'll contact the supplier and ask about warranty. I think these have two year warranty, not sure though.. got mine 27.10.2011, so a little over a year ago.

When I had that happen it was because I installed the wrong ROM. I couldn't even get display to come up but I knew it was powered up. I connected it to a USB on my computer, accessed the SD on my phone and copied a good ROM to it. From there I went into recovery mode and installed the ROM from the SD card in the phone.

BTW, I think I got lucky after sever restarts where I finally got into recovery mode.

I HIGHLY recommend Resurrection Remix. If there's anything better I need to see it!
