Have a question about root without a rom

Hey all, it's been a long while since I posted, been busy with this thing they call life, it kinda interrupts things =).
Anyways, I just had a couple of questions.

1: If I flash over to a rooted stock TW rom, that shouldn't affect the way it works IE: phone number etc...right? If I recall right it does not and the phone works like normal, the network doesn't know if it's rooted or not.

2: I have read and heard at one time there was a way to root, without installing a rom, I was wondering if anyone by chance knew where this was and/or how to do this?.....I am thinking about rooting that way as apposed to the rom way.

You don't have to install a ROM to root, just a kernel packaged with a CWM type recovery to flash in superuser. Alternatively, if you are running Stock S2, you can use the framaroot app to root the phone.

Flashing another ROM won't change your service. If you flash a Sprint labeled ROM and you are on Boost, you will have to change a couple settings for MMS to work but that is easy. If you are on ICS, you could flash the JB for Boost and root all at the same time, by doing a One click install of the Rooted ROM. The phone's service is not affected just by being rooted. :)
