I wont pirate software. Too many free (As in speech and beer) to do that.

I technically pirate media. I say "Technically", because with DVD's, BluRay, and music, I strip all DRM off of the damned thing so I can play the media in ANY device I CHOOSE. Not the devices some corporate honcho says I can. And the corporate honchos said I can not play DVD's and Bluray movies on a Linux PC. So, I strip all the control out, and then I:

* Get to play my media/content on my computer/phone/media player
* I strip out all the crappy FBI warnings/trailers/un-needed subtitles/voice tracks (I don't watch movies in French, Italian, or Spanish)

This is why I actually LOVE Netflix: It's device agnostic (To a point, but they are pretty good at it), and I get to watch my movies where I want to watch them. I also love most of the music lockers out there (Rhapsody being my fav, since they have many different clients on a variety of devices).

Oh very interesting read but I can see that with Anime. I know quite a number of (English speaking) anime entusiasts and those that follow their anime series (religiously) They want to OWN the DVD copy of the show for their collection. They pirate the most recent episodes since it's only out in Japan but once it's out in their Country, they buy the OVA/DVD. For anime, most of the pirated anime (released) are done by fans. That is they do the subtitles translations and it may not look 'professional.

All of the Anime shows I watch I pirate the newest, but then rush to pay WAAAAY too much once it hits shelves :)

I pirated Evangelion series + movies, but as soon as I could get the entire collection on DVD, I paid I think $400 for it :D

And my understanding is that most Japanese anime companies support their fan subbers. They may try to release the Subtitled version quicker and faster, but they aren't taking any legal action against their subbers.
The Japanese companies don't, can't say the same for the Enlgish ones. Usually when the series get liscensed by an Enlgish company, they would request the site to not post the link to it anymore.
