Have you returned your Incredible and now are back to using the Eris?

Got some awesome pictures of the Ren Cen in Detroit with the Eris a few months ago. Personally Im really impressed with the camera.

The Eris camera is fine when there's a decent amount of light. It's still nowhere near the quality of the little 2MP camera in my old Sony Ericsson W810i though.

Not entirely true. Having a large number of megapixels will not guarantee picture quality, and optics are extremely important if a quality image is to be captured. But, there is a huge difference between what is possible at 3MP and what is possible at 8MP. The higher the megapixel count, the more information a sensor can capture and store.

As far as quality images, I will rely on my Canon dSLR for the bulk of my images. But the Eris has surprised me, and provides and alternative to play around and have a workable camera available most of the time that I'm out and about.

Before the Eris, I had an LG Dare, and it was almost impossible for me to get a clear image. If it was a landscape or scenic shot, the image was marginal. Anything close up was out of the question. Given my experience with the Dare, I'm thrilled with the Eris.

I totally agree to a point, when i said dont mean jack...that was probably stretching it a bit...but so is saying there is a huge difference between 3mp and 8mp.

with good glass and identical conditions a 3mp vs 8mp photo would looks only marginally better (if you can notice a difference at all)

Ya this post is inaccurate. I have not seen anyone who said they are going back to the Droid or Eris..I actually have seen one who said they were going back to the Droid but that we because he thinks the droid will get Froyo before HTC products. You sir are just making a non intelligent post the Incredible blows away the Eris there is no comparison and I have owned both.

There are a number of examples of people who have gone back to the Eris in these forums. I returned my DI to reactivate my Eris. These are the reasons:

1. I am outside a great deal and the screen is terrible in sunlight on BOTH phones. This makes the physical call buttons extremely important to me. My inability to see the screen on the ringing DI to accept the call made it impossible to use as a phone when I was outside.

2. The DI is larger than the Eris, making it less "pocketable". This was also very important to me.

3. I did not like the placement of the power button. With the loss of the physical call button on the face, it made it much more difficult for me to easily put my phone to sleep. Since the DI is a bigger power hog, it is more important to manage battery wisely.

The increased speed of the DI was not worth losing these benefits of the Eris, because I can still do everything I want to do on the Eris, only slower. And I still have my NE2 for the next great thing. The speed and screen size are not the most important thing to everyone. The Incredible is a great phone, but so is the Eris.

I pretty much agree with Rubik76. I had an Eris and now an Incredible and my wife still has an Eris. While both the Eris and Incredible are great phones I can not imagine returning my Incredible for the Eris.

  • CDMA - nearly the same.
  • Grounding issues - none for me.
  • Cheep plastic - huh? Incredible feels just as solid as Eris to me. Quality is about the same to me. I would bet plastic is same as Eris.
  • 8mp camera - Is best camera on phone I have ever used. Megapixels aside it is much better than Eris. I'm a semi-pro with a Nikon D300s and I know cameras. While I wont replace any cameras in my bag with the Incredible it is very nice being able to take pictures of this quality when I do not have my gear. If anyone wants me to do comparison shots with Eris of same subjects I would be happy to do so.
  • Battery - Battery life has been fine for me. I'm using a Seidio 1750 battery though. Even with the stock battery I was getting more than a day easily. The TP2's 1500 mAh battery fits in Incredible so I would have to agree that HTC should have gone with the 1500 mAh battery.
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8650 , 1 GHz - The benefits of this CPU outweigh any negatives. This phone is so fast. This is clearly the biggest advantage over the Eris (though with 2.1 the Eris is much better).
  • 3D - I have had no issues with games I have played. Raging Thunder 2 plays flawlessly. I'm not a big 3D game player on cell phones though. Obviously 3D performance is better than Eris.
  • Screen unusable in sunlight - This was the biggest issue for me moving over from Eris and it has turned into a non-issue. I really have no issues in sunlight. Is it worse in sunlight than Eris? Yes. Is it unusable? No. The upside is that the Incredible screen looks amazing indoors.
There are things I like about the Eris better than the Incredible (mainly its size and form factor). With 2.1 the Eris is a lot better than it was with 1.5. I'm very happy with the Incredible though and I have no reservations about moving from Eris to Incredible.

I know a lot of people that buy cameras on MPs alone. They think the more they have, the better the picture. As if they're ever going to print their pics at poster size. I bought a new ELPH camera a while back. First thing people asked me was how many MPs it had. I honestly had to look at it to find out. I had no idea, I had actually forgotten. I bought it because it was a good camera, not because it had 1.3 bajillion MPs.

Anyway, a bit off-topic, sorry.

Oh man, if people are returning the Incredible because the camera is bad compared to the Eris, it must be REALLY bad. The camera on the Eris is the worst I've ever used on a phone.

Lame dude. You must not take care of your phone or something. Because ive had 6 smartphones, & the Eris has by far the best camera out of all of them! Its 5 megapixels on a dam smartphone bro! How the hell can you go wrong with that? I know some people say that the picture quality doesn't ride on the certain number of megapixels you got on your phone... But to me that ain't nothing but pure "BS". Do you think they would make higher megapixel cameras on smartphones if the image quality didn't ride on the MP? No! They would just put cheap ass cameras in the smartphones if it didnt matter.... Also all the other smart phones ive had were 3.2 and ive compared all them to my Eris... and ain't none of them have come close to the beautiful crystal clear quality of my Eris! You might want to clear & clean your Eris camera lense off lmao!!

Ignorance is bliss. The Eris camera isn't terrible but it sure as hell isn't crystal clear either. I took many pictures with my Eris when I had it and the pictures were of average quality for a cell phone.

Either way, the fact that you are spouting off about MP being in direct relation to picture quality tells me that you don't know shit about cameras. Just because a camera has a higher MP camera does not mean it is of higher quality. Far from actually. Hell I still have a 5MP Canon S3 that takes better pictures than a lot of 9-10MP point and shoots out now.

Anyone still using autofocus needs to drop the subject entirely. If you're a good shot, you can get workable photos from these newage camera phones.

I would very much like to see an Eris vs Incredible camera showdown, Fliptwister. Appreciate it. But I have my doubts whether we'll notice any difference at all. The lenses are of still the same quality and size.

I've taken some great pics with the Eris. A lot of what you snap really depends on the lighting and where you position the phone. Patience goes a long long way with this function. You can't just snap away and snap away but overall, I find it adequate.

I like how this thread got stuck on the camera. If anything that was the least important thing. If I need a high quality picture I'll use my Cannon EOS 50D. I just felt there was too much noise in the photos with Incredible. Something I was really hoping to see go away that I've had to suffer through with my Eris. Even with the addition of ability to manually change ISO is a joke because anything over 200 looks terrible. But then if you are using ISO 100 you have to have a pretty steady hand.

I like the ability to not have to carry my DSLR with me for everything, and I was hoping that the camera on the Incredible was going to be equivalent to a low to mid end 5MP point and shoot. But alas it was worse than my old 2.1MP Sony Mavica CD-1000 from 2000. Of course it had a Carl Zeis lens so that probably had something to do with it.

I was really hoping they would put in better optics on the Incredible, but I think they probably used the same on it that they used on the Eris. The only benefit, in my opinion, is the Incredible camera has a flash.

I dunno, I think this is a decent picture for a camera phone. taken with the Incredible.

-------------------------------------------

I've noticed on the Incredible forums and on this forum that some people have returned the Incredible and gone back to their old phones (Droid or Eris).

I for one am one of the people that fell for the hype. I have now decided to return the Incredible and came back to the Eris. I felt there wasn't enough differences or that "WOW" features to justify the purchase. I was wanting to see who else returned their Incredible and has come back to the Eris.

The Goods of Incredible in my findings:
-Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8650 , 1 GHz
-3.7" 480 x 800 - (WGVA) AMOLED display
-8GB of internal memory
-512MB of RAM
-Sense UI

The Bad of Incredible in my findings: Edit: Examples in Red
-CDMA radio performance Reception is worse than Eris in my Office at work To me they look about the same, my wife owns the Eris, have them both by side. Dba is slightly lower on Eris but nothing huge
-Possible grounding issue (Touch screen will not always work based on what material the phone is sitting on) Screen would suffer with screen jumping with no input and would become unresponsive in windshield mount, and charging at my desk at work Never had experienced any of this at all, been having the phone since launch. My dads phone works perectly too
-Cheap plastics (Not what HTC normally puts out. Almost as if it's designed to be dropped and broken) Plastic bezel was severely scratched by keys (Eris still looks brand new) Do we really own the same phone? My bezel looks shiny and new, my wifes Eris silver plastic thing looks faded and the ear speaker grill is black now. The battery cover is the same crap on both phones
-8 MP camera is very poor quality for an 8mp camera (I expected better) The camera is waaaaaaaaayy better than the Eris, so you rather have a weaker camera just because it doesn't take as nice pics as 8mp cameras do? The camera is one of the best for a phone, period!
-Same battery as the Eris (And the Eris forum thought battery life was bad) For a premium smartphone I expected better Now this i can agree with funny though that both last around the same even though the inc. Has a lot better internal specs
-Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8650 , 1 GHz (This 65nm processor is a power hog and has poor 3D processing. TI's newer 45nm OMAP 3 and OMAP 4 with PowerVR technology seems to be just as powerful but uses less power and has better GFX acceleration) Frames skips and lag in games like Raging Thunder and other 3D supported games, I expected the new hotness to play things flawlessly Have you seen the benchmarks? The inc is ahead of the Droid in mflops and it process the polygons a lot faster too. The froyo update perfects this and unleashes the true snapdragon power
-3D accelerations of the integrated ATI z430 (The Droid with it's less powerful OMAP 3430 processor seems to be able to do a better job at processing 3D graphics.) Same as above Same as above
-Out of stock (You are put on a month long waiting list if your phone is defective. Unacceptable Verizon) Was going to try and get a replacement phone on May 18 due to the screen jumping. Customer service rep me told they wouldn't be able to send me a replacement until June 15. Then found on forums that the screen jumping was a common issue and then decided to send the phone back for good. Blame Samsung for that.
-Screen is almost unusable in direct sunlight. (There's a reason that Samsung is making Super AMOLED now) When I was at Wilmington Beach the first week of may I had to cover my head with a towel just to read an e-mail. Bonnie Cha with CNET even states the screen hard to see in bright sunlight Name a touch screen phone that is usable in sunlight, ill be waiting

Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to say the Eris is a better phone than the Incredible. I'm just saying there are certain aspects of the Eris that seem more appealing to me such as build quality that I had trouble overlooking. And it looks like there are other alternatives in the not so distant future. Just getting opinions of people that jumped ship but have came back and why.

As I stated this is only my opinion and is meant to be interpreted that way. Another hope with this thread to also let the Eris owners know they aren't missing as much as they might think, because they are stuck in a contract and waiting might end up prevailing in the end.

It is more or less a discussion of why people ended up going with the Eris instead of the Incredible. I stated my opinion of the device that is all.

This discussion is not meant for the Incredible users to come in here and start bashing people because they think their phone is being threatened.
See the blue areas. No one is feeling threatened but it looks like you werent fully informed on the capabilities of the phone. The froyo update is making wonders for these types of phones. My wife would take my inc over her eris in a heartbeat, its like how a lot of people said before, its an Eris but with the Droid similar (actually better) processing power. The phone that lots of people wished the Eris was at launch.

Ehh, I have an Eris, and I like it. I don't see the point in buying a faster version of it, I have actually been thinking about getting a Palm Pre, or Pixi. The Pixi loaded Verizons website faster than my eris, and that's on sprints shitty network. If I get another phone, it will be the Droid. The main problem I have with the Eris is the keyboard, it lags a lot. I'm a teen, so texting is a must, the on screen keyboard. I downloaded swype for it, but the trial ended. (Anyone know where I can get the full?) With all of that, I think I'm gonna get a droid, and sell verizon My Eris.

I was about to flame you but you said you were a teen lol!! You said you were thinking about buying a palm because it loaded the pages faster and want the droid because the on-screen texting is slow yet you dont want a faster phone????? What????
You pretty much contradict yourself. The incredible bests in both of those categories plus more. All three droids are great, love them 3 but to me the inc is the best for my needs. From the looks of it itll be the best for you too.

Call me ignorant if you want, but I think it's ridiculous that some of you people are going out and spending a good chunk of your hard earned cash for a phone that, when you REALLY think about it, is only a little bit better than the Eris.

Sure, maybe it's quicker, but how much quicker do you need your phone to be??? Is the 1 or 2 seconds quicker it loads an app worth the money it costs to upgrade?

And yeah it's camera is 3 megapixels more than the Eris, but even 5 megapixels is a billion times better than cameras that were just fine a few years ago. What the hell people??

Are people turning professional photographers using their damn cell??? How high quality of a camera do you need on you freaking phone?!? If your THAT serious about photography, go buy a professional digital camera!

My opinion -- Everyone on here who has ir does own an Eris knows that their Eris works above and beyond what any of us should expect from a cell phone. Paying to upgrade to something for bragging rights is not only stupid, it makes you look stupid as well.

Even if you buy the Incredible, it'll only be outdated in 6 months because VZW knows that SOME of you will pay ridiculous amounts of money because their new phone loads apps 0.0005th's of a second faster than it's predecessor.

I for one am not buying into this "Incredible" phase, nor will I buy into the next one. Verizon might push it as this amazing advancement in the Android scheme, but I'll bet you a years salary they're laughing all the way to the bank.

If they can afford it, I certainly wouldn't say someone who wants to switch from and Eris to an Incredible is being stupid. It's their money and they should feel free to spend it as they wish. Now if they are switching at the expense of paying bills or putting food on the table, etc. just so they can brag about having the latest and greatest, then yes, that would be stupid.

Myself, money is a concern so while I would rather have the best phone out there right now, what I can afford and what I want are totally different things. Others don't have that problem and for those people, I don't consider them stupid just because they are better off monetarily than I am.

I'm happy with my eris will upgrade only when I am due. By then, there should be a selection of 4g phones to choose from. I'm not going to argue that Eris is better than incredible, because I know it's not. But it more than meets my needs.

A) you guys should be buying your phone's from Best Buy because we have no mail in rebates and in some instances will match the NE2

B) a lot of Best Buy's still have the Inc in stock and you can get our protection plans that have no deductibles (as opposed to the $80-$125 on most carrier insurances)

C) as an Eris owner (as well as about 40 other cell phones; I go through a lot of phones) I made the realization that you may not always need the latest and greatest.

Would I like the Incredible if it was offered to me free? Of course. The Incredible is simply an upgrade to the Eris. But to be honest how much of an upgrade is it? Do you really need the extra computing power? The Eris with 2.1 has all the functions you really need. Hell for the most part the crappy POS sliders are probably cover 80% of most people's phone needs. You have to take a step back and really ask yourself if you're even going to really use all the other functions that your phone has.

I couldn't tell you the number of times I've had a customer come in and say they want an iPhone and then realize that they have no idea what to do with it let alone even know what the other 60% of the features are. Most people only do phone calls and texting (e-mail is a toss up as to importance...).

I know this really doesn't make a case for either side, but what I'm trying to say is take a step back and realllllyyyy evaluate whether you need the extra power and if it's worth resigning for another two years and dropping some change on that new phone that you may or may not need for all the "extra" features.

are you a best buy spokesperson or something? lol just fyi verizon's insurance deductible is $50, not as much as you put but still 50 is 50 haha, how much is the monthly insurance charge?.. just out of curiousity, how many times can a phone be replaced through best buys insurance? just wondering :D

It's even more stupid when you don't even own an Incredible to compare your unfounded assumptions. I owned the Eris since November and I recently purchased the Incredible. The difference was easily worth it to me. Although they have some things in common, the Incredible is a much better smart phone from my experience.

BTW. I don't expect great quality photos but the ones on the Eris are not even usable. My old LG dare took better pics.
