Root Having problems with flashing Firmware

Maksis

Newbie
So I installed a new ROM [SkyDragon] for my HTC M8 and everything works fine except the wifi. To make the wifi work I need to update my firmware or something like that.

Someone suggested me this https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23991606952614816. I tried flashing it trought TWRP but I'm getting this error:
Checking for MD5 file...
Skipping MD5 check: no MD5 file found
Error flashing zip '/external_sd/5.1_6_FIRMWARE_NOHBOOT.zip'
Updating partition details...
...done

And then Failed under the log

Also here is what SKYDRAGON FAQ is saying about this, but I don't understand much there:

------------------------------

Q: Why isn't wifi working?

A: Need to flash either latest GPE L firmware in this post, or Latest Sense firmware 4.16.xxxx.x. If you are S-ON however you will have to wait until you get latest Official OTA for your device as you cannot flash a different firmware unless you are S-OFF. If you still don't have wifi after firmware flash you need to clean your system/data(Not sdcard)/cache and reflash the rom.

-------------------------------

Also I've got S-OFF

Would you please provide the link for the actual Skydragon instructions you got on to, it would be helpful to know what you've been told and where you're at in the process.

Try this :
  1. Open Settings panel and click on the "Wi-Fi" tile

  2. Tap on the "3 dots" menu in the upper right corner

  3. From the list select "Wi-Fi Direct"
  4. You will now see that your device is called "Android_ed2c". Tap on the "3 dots" menu in the upper right corner
  5. From the list select "Rename device"
  6. Replace the "Android_ed2c" with the "HTC One" text and hit "OK" button

That didn't work

Scroll a bit lower and you'll find the FAQ

And I completely installed the ROM , everything is working perfectly except the WIFI
Move the firmware zip to the physical (not internal) sd card.

Rename to 0P6BIMG.zip

I suggest using a file browser on the phone for the rename so you don't get the Windows problem of the name ending in .zip.zip.

Boot into FASTBOOT, if the zip matches it will update automatically.

Keep track of the messages given if it fails, you may need to SuperCID mod.

Btw - make sure that you can still enter recovery via HBOOT when done.

If successful, remove from sd card or you're going to have the firmware update every time you go to FASTBOOT.

Can anything unreversable happen if I download the wrong firmware? Don't know how trustworthy is the link.

The link may be trustworthy but if you don't have a governing thread telling you what's in it, it's probably a VERY good idea to be cautious.

S-off does give you great power.

According to the main thread for the GPE you selected (and thank you for going to xda, there are a lot of dodgy sites out there!) the dev said that you could use the latest normal 4.16 firmware or the GPE stuff.

I didn't find an explicit firmware link in that thread so maybe being conservative is best.

Here's one of the comprehensive firmware resources for our phone -

http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/development/progress-fuu-m8-t2813792

I've done firmware flashing that way and also via the sd card / fastboot method I mentioned earlier.

If you like, put your phone in FASTBOOT USB mode, get a command window where you have fastboot and say -

fastboot getvar all

In the command window, alt+space for menu, E for edit, select all, copy and paste here.

Remove the IMEI and serial numbers for your protection.

I'd be glad to look over your configuration that way and offer any better advice if possible.

Definitely keep track of your CID before doing a SuperCID mod though, so posting those results here could be a plus that way as well.

Is there a way to check what firmware I've got now? What if it's not even the problem that's causing this

Don't really know what I need from there so here's everything:

*** Software status: Modified ***
*** UNLOCKED ***
M8_UL PVT SHIP S-OFF
CID-HTC__102
HBOOT- 3.19.0.0000
RADIO- 1.25.214500021.06G
OpenDSP- v48.2.2-00564-M8974_FO(or zer0).1211
OS-4.16.401.10
eMMC-boot 2048MB

So how do we know now if it's outdated or not?

OK - see how your OS version is already at 4.16? (The last two minor numbers - 401.10 - describes your region/carrier group and don't really matter.)

According to the FAQ quoted, you're already at the required firmware level.

More accurately, although you're not running Sense 4.16, you do have the firmware current as of that version.

So, according to their instructions -

TWRP, Wipe, Advanced - check boxes for system, data, and cache ONLY

(Your OS and data will be gone, only the bootloader and TWRP will work.)

TWRP, Install - install the rom again.

So -

- Make sure you have the rom zip on your physical sd card

- Make sure of your Titanium Backups

- Make sure you have backups to the physical sd card, even better to your pc also

- You're going to lose everything in the /data area, if in doubt, copy internal sd card to pc

Well... I don't know how It happened but I forgot to do a backup...

But it works atleast ! Except the wifi... ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)

And the ROM looks so different and much better, I have a pretty strong felling that before this I installed and outdated version of the ROM...

Now I have a feeling that the wifi might be my routers fault , I'll soon go to the store and buy some credit to check if internet works atleast trough Mobile Network.

Everything is working perfectly, looks like my router somehow changed the password to some random numbers.

Big thanks for sticking with me EarlyMon for helping me not brick my device and without you I'd probably would still be sitting on an outdated ROM.

Well that be it for me. Thanks for everything and goodbye! o7

Umm... So I got a GPE 5.1 L-MR1 update notification, how do I deal with updates now that I'm rooted , should I install or what?

Double check in the GPE thread.

Many roms do their own OTAs now - just like from the carrier only way cooler. :)

See if that's what you're getting - if so, do a backup for safety and take the update, less hassle than updating by hand with TWRP. ;)
