Having slow charging issues....

Like probably most people on this forum, I upgraded to an HTC EVO V 4G from the Motorola Triumph. All said and done, I don't regret the change one bit, even despite my charging woes... this phone is great!

But either way, I'm having some pretty slow charging. I'm not sure if it is just the way this phone is or if there's a specific issue with mine.

I did do some testing, too. Basically, I took a USB extension cable and cut it open, then hooked a multimeter up to the 5v wire and tested the amperage under various circumstances.

Basically what I was seeing was a steady 550ish mA from the charger regardless of the state of the phone (using apps, video, etc). I tested it with the stock charger, a Motorola charger (from the Triumph), and a Verizon charger. They all put out roughly the same numbers. I was using the included cable for all of this.

With the Triumph on the other hand, I would get about 650 mA, and then if I push the phone a little (get the CPU going, turn the flashlight on, etc) the mA would go even higher into the 800's. The EVO does not seem to do this at all, it just stays at 550mA which sometimes is pretty inadequate in my opinion.

Using a battery monitoring utility (Battery Monitor Widget) I am seeing the available amperage sometimes dip into the negative if the phone is being used while charging, meaning that it is actually discharging the battery even though it's plugged in. The Triumph just pulled charge like a mother****er, and would never do this!

So I'm a little disappointed with the charging, it's very slow. It takes about 3+ hours to charge from 0% to 100% if the phone is on and idle. I don't recall what the Triumph was capable of but I believe it was much better and probably half that.

Oh yeah, one more thing, I wasn't able to directly test the amperage with my Motorola car charger but I can say pretty confidently that it defies all of this and charges the phone fast as hell! Wtf? Why can't the wall charger do that? hah

Thoughts? Anybody having a different experience?

Oh yeah, I can also say that the battery use itself is pretty darned good compared to the Triumph. The phone seems to last a lot longer, so I'm not entirely disappointed!

0-100% in 3 hours sounds reasonable to me tbh.
I don't think so. My tablet gets charged up in two hours and that's a 4000 mah battery. To the OP, the phone charging times get better. My evo goes from like 20 to 90% in 50 minutes now, compared to the 4 hours it took the first five or so times. I'm guessing that the battery hardware/software is made to trickle charge new batteries.

Yes 3h is reasonable, although you really shouldn't let your batt go down to 0.

You MIGHT only take 2h to charge a 4000mah batt in your tablet BUT is it using a special cord/psu that is supplying > .5A? Like the Nook Color did? (1A @ 5V, .5A is standard specced USB current output)

o.w. your batt really isn't 4000mah which is quite likely if it's a cheap china tab or a re-branded one.

Ha I have my tablet under "my devices", HTC Flyer. Hardly a "china tab".
This picture confirms the battery size
HTC Flyer Cracking Open: 3.7V 4000mAh 14.8Whr Li-ion battery (Model: BG41200) | 31 of 72

Charge times over 2hrs are unreasonable. My laptop can get charged in that time. I just checked the psu's of my Optimus V, Flyer, and Evo.
Optimus V charger- 5.1v@.7a
Flyer charger- 9v@1.67a
Evo charger- 5v@1a
Obviously charger output varies so you could hardly say that there's a solid standard that is followed. All that matters is the time that it takes for the stock charger to charge the device. Also I usually charge up at the end of the day when my batteries are around 15%

.5A is the USB standard, but virtually all smartphones are able to exceed this with their stock chargers. Most chargers are rated from .8 to 1 full amp. That's why they charge slow as balls on PC ports (500mA) but usually much faster with stock charger. All of the chargers I tested with in original post were rated from 800mA to 1A.
