HBoot - How to check?

I have searched enough and only method comes up to check hboot is apparently holding down volume down button and switching HDH on.

I've tried it on my orange branded desire HD but it just shown a flashy wall paper and then orange logo appears.

My software version is 1.40.61.2 and all I want to do it get rid of orange crap from it and use a generic htc software.

Could someone please help me in simple words?

Yes mine does that, can reset to factory default using settings etc but that does not remove anything nor does it wipe any phone history from the handset. Mine is Vodafone branded so anyone know how to get branding off it would be great if you could let us guys know. Checked out XDA but all seems very confusing as to which rom we should be using. Mine is 1.75.161.2

Download Elixir from market, that shows bootloader version.
