HDMI out with HBO Go app?

I wanted to buy an HDMI adapter for my Note 2 so that I could watch HBO from the HBO Go app on my TV. (I do have a Roku, but HBO Go is not working properly on the Roku.)

However, when I read reviews for the adapter, I saw this from one Note 2 user's review:

The reason I ordered the adapter was to watch tv shows on my big screen tv that were available through apps like HBO GO and XFinity's Player app. The problem is that these apps recognize that you have connected the adapter and the app requests/requires you to disconnect the adapter in order to view the content. So, this adapter is great for seeing your phone's screen on your tv. Just don't expect it to work with all apps, especially those tv-type apps I mentioned.
Has anyone else had this problem, a TV app forcing you to unplug the adapter? I don't want to buy the adapter online and have to hassle with returning it if it doesn't work.

I don't have HBO Go or HDMI connector, but have you tried Twonky Beam app? I used it to wirelessly beam youtube video to my TV via WiFi. You have to have a DLNA TV though.

FWIW, the HBOGO app will display on my 1080p TV however the content appears to be SD level resolution. Other apps appear to be displayed in the native resolution (e.g. video shot with the Note itself via stock video player), where my Vulkano app streaming 1080p channels may not look quite like 1080p, nor be presented in "full screen". I also believe that output is "app dependent". I'm using a cable similar to this:
