Help Headphone jack "failure"

Android 2.1
Network - Telstra (does it really matter?)
Task killer not used
Am I rooted? Err, I don't know but guess I am not.
ROM - Dunno.
Phone: HTC Desire.

Issue:
Got the phone and it works.
One day tried the headset - the ear plugs and mic for hands free phone use and radio use.
It worked.

That was a few months ago.
Now I was needing the headset/ear plugs and plugged them in.

NOTHING!

Tried it in another phone (desire) and heard noises as the ring volume level was adjusted. Little beeps as the up/down buttons were pressed.

Tried new headset and nothing is heard in the headset.
Play music, and the phone's speaker continues to play the sound.

Is this a "mechanical" problem as in the jack is Broken, or "software" as in the headset is detected and therefore the speaker is disabled?

Would/are there any apps which could/may do that?

It could be either, but for whatever reason the headset is not being detected. The obvious thing to do is to check in the socket itself and see if there is some lint or anything that could be blocking a connection from taking place.

Next, if you cant see anything, give it a blow.

Thanks much.

Looked in the socket/hole. Didn't really see much.
:(

Update to problem:
I took the battery out.

Replaced it and now the headphones work.

Just out of interest, what does that piece of code do and HOW do I apply it?
