Help Headphone jack port

I recently got the Samsung Galaxy light for metro PCs and when I plug in my earphones I doesn't "read" them so idk if its just the phone or if I need " special" ear phones (I've tried the regular 3.5mm earphones)
 
Regular earphones should work just fine. A status bar icon should show, and you should also get the stupid freaking "recommended apps" persistent notification in the notification tray. Try a different pair of headphones, and if that doesn't work, take your phone back to where you bought it for a replacement.
