Help Headphone jack stoped working

I am a new member .Have had my phone for almost 2 years (htc evo 4g).Have an issue with the headphone jack.I use Pandora every day thru my stereo.I also use earbuds sometimes.Every thing worked fine until I tried a pair of Dr Dre noise canceling headphones. The jack on the Dr Dre have 4 sections on it. most headphones have only 3. Now the phone output jack will not work.I have tried different headphones and except for in my phone they are working. I restarted phone and also removed battery still not working. When I get pandora or any other music app up on the phone, the speaker on the back of the phone works but as soon as I plug in a headphone in I get the headphone icon on the phone but sound only for a split second and the music icon showes pause.
Is there a software update that anyone knows of that might help.I have checked all the postes I could find on the internet but have not found a fix yet .Can someone help, thanks Rick

Did you check your jack for any foreign objects such as fuzz, lint etc?
