Heads up on an app that won't let the phone go to sleep.

The latest version of Wapedia was keeping mine awake until I uninstalled it. The older version didn't cause this problem.

I'm finding that how you leave the app is sometimes the problem. I have Wapedia installed and do not have the issue because I use the back button multiple times to exit. But if I open the app, then hit the home button it does in fact keep the phone awake. After realizing this, I tested Palmary Weather again and it's the exact same situation. If I hit the home button the phone continues to run. But if I exit using the back key several times it does shut down. The reason I wasn't doing that originally is because I wanted the app to open to a certain page. Looks like that isn't possible, but at least I can use the app again.

Wonder if we need a separate list for apps that need to be exited correctly?

Anyone have any thoughts on this? I'm kinda thinking I'll leave it up there and you can decide for yourself if you want to deal with it or any of the other IM apps.

eBuddy is the only multi-IM app I've found that doesn't drain the battery like crazy. Sadly it has other issues that I wish I could move away from it (like it doesn't tell me when people are idle on Yahoo, and I'm not a fan of the bubble layout).

I just tried meebo again and lost 25% of my battery in an hour.

--edit--

Oh, I was just looking through eBuddy and there is an option to "Extend battery life" which I have enabled, so maybe that's why my battery isn't crap when using it. it says messages may be delayed up to 15 minutes when app is in background, so I guess it just doesn't check for messages as often?

Just because thats how it functions, doesnt mean its OK. This thread is for apps that won't let the phone sleep, and Meebo is one of them, regardless of how its used.

I know that someone answered my question about how to tell what application is keeping your phone awake before but now that I have my phone I am confused. I have tons of "backgroud" applications:
Accounts & Sync
Android Live Wallpapers
Astrid Tasks
Astro
Gesture Search
Gmail
Google Voice
HTC Message Uploader
HTC Sense
Internet
Mail
Market
Messages
My Verizon
News and Weather
People
reddit is fun
Settings
Slacker
Swype
Sync Service
Transdroid
Twitter

So anyone of these apps could cause problems to my system? Should I uninstall apps that are listed as backgroud? How do I know which of these could cause poor battery life?

Check for the ones that update automatically while using the 3G Radio to download new data in the background. ANYTHING that uses 3G extensively, whether your phone is "on" or not, will KILL your battery VERY quickly.

You will have to go through each of those app's settings manually for the most part to check.

Hope that helps!

the System Panel application makes it easy to tell which apps are keeping the phone awake. use the live monitoring feature and it'll show which apps use cpu and when. this app is just great. the live monitoring doesn't seem to use any extra battery from my experience. i leave it running 100% of the time and i get great battery life.

also, i find it helps to back out of apps instead of just hitting home when you're done. when i back out of an app i notice that the app shows up in the inactive list inside of system panel instead of the active column. inactive meaning that it's sitting idle, but cached and ready to be started right back up if asked to.

removed my lock and ATK and installed system panel and lockbot and instantly got better battery life. the only thing i notice that consistently drains my battery is streaming radio. i use the sirius/xm app.

Yeah anything streaming will kill battery life really. Engadget widget although doesn't keep the phone awake persay it def drains battery life. I ended up getting rid of it and added engadget RSS to feedr.

I also found this to be extremely important. Several apps I had issues with were all resolved by simply backing out. Little frustrating, but easy enough.

Also, using SystemPanel there is a very easy way to find out if it's a background app or an active app that is keeping your phone awake.

1. Open SystemPanel
2. Click End All
3. Make sure the level stops at Background Apps and hit End Tasks.
4. Check sleep status.

If it's fixed, you'll have to reboot and end the background tasks one by one till you find the culprit. If it's still staying awake, then just start killing the active apps. This can help save a lot of time when you're not sure where to start.

Speaking of Meebo and AIM, I like both but HATE the drain on the battery. Is there any way to integrate Facebook chat into Google Talk? I would like to see if a native Google App would be less of a drain on my phone than those two. I've looked into it an you have to use a 3rd party client like XMPP or Jabber. I can't seem to get them to work. Anyone else tried this yet?

I tried that but it didn't work. I killed everything but the power and the phone stayed awake. Until I restarted. Then it slept the rest of the day while off. It usually happens once a day, all at random times, then I simply restart and it goes away. But it sucks that I can't figure it out.

On a side note, not totally OT, I believe that battery life is simply due to how long the phone is "awake" vs. "up time". I have found it really doesn't matter what I'm doing (other than talking non stop) while the phone is awake. Internet, FB, GPS, email, doesn't matter as long as the phone sleeps when I hit the button. But when the phone doesn't sleep everything runs all the time and the battery drains like a sieve.

I've had a new battery drain and tracked it to Gmail Unread Count. It was HAMMERING my battery life. Sadly, I uninstalled it because otherwise it's a great app.

I'm trying something now. When my phone goes into the uptime=awake time mode I have to shut it down to fix it. But the shutdown takes some time whereas it usually doesn't. I'm thinking that ADW Launcher might be causing it. I uninstalled and will monitor.

Edit: ADW was not it. Happened again today. Phone will just not go to sleep, time to reboot again.
