Help Heating problem with S2

I got my phone 2 days ago and it would no longer charge due to "battery too hot or cold" message. i put together that these phones are configured to run hot out of the box. to fix i..
1 removed my running widgets
2 turned off my wifi and gps
3 disabled all syncing features (gmail, etc.)
3 enabled all my power saving features
4 closed all my running apps
5 charged only a few 15 minutes at a time.

hopefully i dont kill this one.

I have been using this phone for over three weeks now.
The first impression was great. good display and power. android runs smooth.

But in the last week, i have got the phone totally stuck two times. The unlock button for display ON/OFF stops responsding. The area under the camera gets so hot that one can barely touch it.

Both the times, i was driving in my car and bluetooth was paired to the car. Once i got a call and i was talking on car`s headset unit. Second time i did not even get a call. Both the times, the phone was just gone.

I had to remove battery and let it cool off and then it came to life again. I showed it to the store guy from where i bought the phone and he was going to drop it because the phone was so hot.

reading this thread , it looks like that this is not because of some application thats creating the problem but more of some core kernel object thats hogging the CPU.

SAMSUNG should give an update soon to fix it or should call back Galaxy S2s.

Same thing happened with me, I bought the phone 3 months back and since Last 1 month I am experiencing the Hanging and overheating 2-3 times when i played music using car bluetooth and couple of times without any reason...planning to take the phone to the doctor(service store) and will update u guys later...really disgusting......

Well, it sounds logical and I wish it was actually true. But it isn't...

I've used the phone heavily in the first week, installing apps, copying tons of files, playing videos, music, trying out various games, just to see what the phone can do, all the while having it on the charger, I had the screen to never turn off etc.

And from all that, it NEVER got hot.

Then, 3 days ago, i had it just laying on the bed, charging locked, with screen turned off. 3 Hours later, it was piping hot and had barely accrued any charge - with nobody using it at all.

And the heat was near camera, not near battery.

So, I think your argument makes sense - when there's nothing wrong.

But I think the SGS2 does have something wrong with it. Maybe some random thing running the processor ragged, even when nobody using it.

Given how Apple treated customers with their bad solder spots on Nvidia equipped MacBooks, I am wondering if I should return this thing while I still can...

I mean what can we expect except denial of the problem and standard lines like "well it'll get hot when you play games"

someone even said it'll get hot when you make phone calls...

Nokia may have lost the plot now, but I remember not one phone from them that had any noticable rise in temperature from making phone calls.

Certainly nothing to burn your ears off...
What you described above was exactly my experience! Bought it last Sat., spent hours loading/learning/gaming w/out any heat - all while charging. Got up this morning and used it for 20 min. (surfing w/ wifi, no games) and it used 70% batt life! It has been charging for hours now and reached only 65%. At times -- too hot to use the phone.

I just got the AT&T Galaxy S2 and I'm having the same problem... I have 2 batteries and it happens with both of them; same thing. It varies between when the phone is plugged in charging or not, phone just gets extremely hot and drains the battery excessively. If it's not charged in it flies down, if it is plugged in it still drains believe it or not but more slowly.... Whats going on? No fix on the horizon?...... :(

Whats the best temperature app to download to check how hot my phone gets?

I am using widgetsoid. They have customizable widgets and one of the option was for battery temperature. I can now see my battery temperature from my home screen.

Charging: 39 -40 Degree Celcius
Normal Use: 30 - 37 Degree Celcius (Include playing angry birds/movies)
Sleep: 27-29 Degree Celcius
Playing HD games: 41 Degree Celcius (Max)

That's battery temperature. It does get hot at the back, near the camera because (I am guessing) of the fact that it is where the opening in the back cover is located. It gets hot to be a little uncomfortable, but not so much that you can't still use it.

Cheers

My 2 month old Galaxy S2 has a problem that when i use the rt hand top button to 'switch-down' the phone, then put it in my pocket, then climb into my car, which is equipped with a Bluetooth Parrot device, the phone begins to heat up extraordinarily, stops working, and the battery must be removed to reset back to normal.
the heat is primarily at the top part of the phone, on both sides.
Because the screen is blank, it is not possible to identify what is happening.
if it is allowed to continue, the battery is eventually totally discharged.
Anyone else experiencing this problem ?

+1

To me, it's a no brainer that the phone will get warm at some point if you're extensively using it, like any PC would (except you might not notice it so much due to the internal fan/s).

My handset has never become hot, just a bit warm when i've been charging it and playing a game at the same time for instance. When i charge it overnight, it never gets hot or even warm to touch and this does not happen with general use either.

Hi Bro , can you really conform that your phone never boiled up no matter what. Today I have asked for a refund. Once I have got the motherboard replaced. what I have observed is that i have never been able to cross the 500 mb benchmark lest 837 mb, fill mb and be ready to switch it off in next 10 minutes to save from over heating.Every time i open a 10 mb pdf it starts to cook itself.I am wondering whats the point of putting in 1.2 ghz and 1 gb ram if all the battery is lost in overheating..?

Hey guys I have had similar issues. I plugged my phone in to charge before going to bed and woke up the next morning with it boiling hot. Top end of the phone near the camera. I took it into Bell Mobility (Canada) and they sent it out for repair. The repair center wanted to charge me 85$ while still under the 1 year warranty AND extended warranty. I have contacted Samsung directly and I now have bell shipping the phone out to Quebec where Samsung head office is located. They are taking over the repairs. Not sure if a recall will undergo but it seems as if many people are having identical problems

i cant switch on my phone galaxy s2 i tried every thing i even went to fix but every one is saying it's the CPU damaged .

My S2 suddenly became incredibly hot this evening for the first time since got it two weeks ago.

I was playing Shoot The Apple for 3minutes when the phone became very very hot to the point it was feeling dangerous. The battery was 32C but the area around the camera was hot as hell.

Never had this before but noticed this evening the phone rebooted and the battery level dropped like crazy.

This phone has been a constant stack of worsening problems.!!!!

a bad external sdcard will cos your S2 to heat up. when i first unboxed mine, first thing i did was to install an old 8gb card i had, not knowing it had become defective. phone heated up so bad i thought it was gonna melt.

Trouble is i don't have one fitted yet. My phone has never gone as hot as that before.. was wondering if it was that reboot?

Seems fine this morning after shutdown and a charge.

just couldn't believe a phone would get that hot!! A device shouldn't get that hot unless there is a problem or design issue. It sounds like a lot get hot like this for no real reason.

I just played 10min of Osmos game and my phone went very hot again. Is this really normal? I have never used a smartphone that warms up like this. I had no other running applications and a clear RAM.
Batter was drained very fast too it was 38C but the area around the camera was hot - not warm - hot.
Are there any fixes?

The more I use the S2 the more I wonder what all the fuss was about. iPhone killer??? Hmmm. Really disappointing .

Hi members,
I've read a few comments made by some of you. I recently bought myself a brandnew SGS2, but after I think 3 months I had to return it, because it turned itself off to never start again. Thought: battery dead even though it was 75% full, so charge it, to only find it scorching hot in my desk.
BelCompany told me they would send it back to Samsung NL, who told them after two weeks they replaced the mainboard since it was burned out (...). No questions asked, simply replaced, but completely empty of course. After installing most apps again, memory card, etc, I found it working again just fine, just to find it really hot again, last Friday. Discharging almost in 1,5 hrs, practically impossible to charge it via USB (says charging, but discharging even faster).
I will bring it back to the shop again to ask for a better solution. I installed Android System Info and found my battery in a state of 42C/107F, which is imho too high for a phone in standby. It is a nice hand-warmer though
Btw I use i9100XXKI4. Will try an update through Kies now first, but the phone tells me all is in order...(at least it sits there nice and warm :$)

I noticed my S2 getting warm yesterday while charging/sharing wifi so I started looking for a cpu temp app. Then I remembered I'd got Battery Graph Widget installed which has an option to show battery temperature. I enabled that option and now have a reasonably accurate way of monitoring the phone's overall temperature. I've so far seen anything from 6c in the car this morning to 39c in a warm room being used as mentioned above. As a frame of reference, the core temperatures on my PC are showing 43 and 51c at the moment...

Hi friends, I am a newbie of Android - I wand to buy a new white Samsung Galaxy I9100 (not the 9100G), but afraid of this over-heating issues, so need yr help:
- Is the latest official Samsung firmwares 2.3.6 solve this problem ??
- Or I need to root & flash with KF2/KF4 ?? pls advise how ??
- After installing the new ICS without rooting, is this solve ??
Thx in advance for help/tips :)

I think the overheating does not occur for all phones. It doesn't for me. It does get hot after heavy usage like playing HD games. You do not need root to get ICS. In fact, as you can see, ICS is already being rolled out. Some have complain of problems though....
