I am such a newbie that I don't even have my first Android phone yet but it is on order and might be here tomorrow. My carrier is Virgin Mobile and my new phone will be the HTC Evo V 4G. Despite some issues reported for the phone (problems with radio/signal) I look forward to receiving it and figuring out how to use it, program it, etc.
Still researching to figure out what the "essential" Android apps are, realizing that I need to know what the phone can do before deciding what needs to be added/changed, but the research is always fun!
