I am a new android phone user, I was randomly given one that had to be unlocked. I found all the info I needed here on these pages. I then went to my provider and had it put on my contract. Then of course there was more problems... none of which were solved by my provider but all were solved by the smart, friendly people here in the forums! It is nice to meet you all!
