Root HELP! Accidentally Wiped Internal Storage and OS on HTC ONE M8

Ok, not a problem, we'll take the scenic route - there's more than one way to get you good to go.

Start menu, Accessories, do you see a black icon named something like command, command prompt, or command window?

If yes, launch that.

Tell me if success or failure. :)

Ok, the next bit is only a little tricky, but really not bad.

We're going to use the command window and the Windows Explorer and the command window again for a little magic.

In the command window say -

cd(spacebar)

In other words, cd and then a space. The space is critical.

Go to the Windows Explorer.

Single click the sdk-tools folder. Now, click and hold, and drag it (the sdk-tools folder) to the command window. When in command window, let go of mouse.

You should now see:

cd "C:\blahblahblah-whatever-do-not-care\sdk-tools"

If true, hit return, report success or failure.

Congratulations! You're going to be fine! :)

Because you're on UK/3, download this file -

http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/m8/openrecovery-twrp-2.8.5.0-m8.img

Do not touch it with WinRar or any other Windows tool - except your Windows Explorer.

Using Windows Explorer, move or copy it to the sdk-tools folder.

When finished, highlight and copy the following line with your mouse:

fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.8.5.0-m8.img

Single click anywhere in or on the command window to make it active again.

Alt+shift will bring up a menu, press E for Edit, P for Paste - the command should appear in there as it does here in the browser.

Hit return to begin the new TWRP installation.

When complete you should see a message of some bytes transferred (give or take 16k I forget exactly) and an OKAY.

Report back whether that happened or something else.

No matter - there are many versions of Windows, so we have to try another way.

In the far upper left of the command window, can you click on the icon and bring up the menu that way?

E to Edit, P to Paste - if successful and the command appears there, hit return to begin the new TWRP installation.

When complete you should see a message of some bytes transferred (give or take 16k I forget exactly) and an OKAY.

Report back whether that happened or something else.

Ok, finally, we install the rom. :)

First - are you absolutely certain that it's for the One M8, not the One, and that it's good for the UK/3 (or any GSM network).

If even the slightest doubt, or if you did not get it from our forums or XDA, please link to me the forum where you found it.

It's essential that we have 100% trust before installing.

And if you have the standand One M8, it is a Sense rom, and if you have the Google Play Edition M8, bought directly from Google, it is a GPE rom.

The stock versions are NOT interchangeable. This is critical.

On your phone, the volume buttons and power work together to act like an old-school feature phone mouse.

Using the volume keys to move up or down, select HBOOT.

Quick tap on power button will make it so.

In hboot menu, select Recovery.

Quick tap on power button will make it so.

The TWRP screen appears, then the choices.

On your PC, move or copy the rom zip file that you've downloaded to the sdk-tools folder using your Windows Explorer.

Do not unzip or WinRar it - just move it intact to sdk-tools.

You can right-click it to get properties and then use your mouse to copy its name out of properties precisely (depending on the Windows version, sorry), and this can save you typing in a moment.

On the phone, TWRP menu, choose Advanced.

Choose adb sideload - slide to begin process.

In the command window, either type exactly, filling in the right name -

adb sideload name-of-rom-file.zip

Or -

adb sideload(spacebar)(use Menu/Edit/Paste trick to put in name)(hit enter)

Report back what happens.
