HELP - App for locking/unlocking (shutdown) tablet at predetermined times

Hi everyone,

I have a dilemma where I need to prevent a user to operate the tablet between the hours of 11pm - 9am. (e.g. children/family).

Ideally, I want it to be unlocked during the day, but then "shutdown automatically" at a predetermined time (i.e. their bedtime), without the user being able to turn it back on, until the timer has expired.

Note: we are not home to confiscate the tablet. The user needs to be able to turn back on at a predetermined time (preferably without the need to enter any passwords).

Could someone please recommend an App which provides this functionality?

Make: Nextbook
Model: NX008HD8G

Cortex A9 (dual core), 1.5GHz
DDR: 1GB
OS: Android 4.0

Thanking you all in advance.

Scott

Welcome to the forums we are glad you are here :)

Most things I have found will not completely do what you desire. There are several Kiosk type lock programs but they limit functionality to the apps you tell it to but not the times you tell it to.

My assumption here is you are simply trying to prevent a kid from using the tablet during the times they are supposed to be sleeping. You can turn off internet access at a certain time. I was able to do this through my routers settings. However that will only solve part of your issue and not the whole issue.

Please let us know if you find something that works the way you desire so that we can share that information with others who also are looking for something similar :)

Thanks for your swift reply Argedion.

You are correct - I'm trying to prevent the use of the tablet completely, during bedtime, so turning off wifi will not solve in this case.

I look forward to other suggestions....

Thanks again.

I think you can do it with Tasker although may require root.
You can set up a Profile which will initiate reboot (built-in Tasker action) or shutdown (Secure Settings action) every 2 minutes during the specified timeframe (when the device is on).

Tasker also has several built in lock features to prevent people from disabling profiles. I'm not sure if it has the capability to prevent people from closing Tasker from the applications manager. (if it doesn't, that would be a way to circumvent the profile)

Building on the Tasker idea, you can use Tasker and the Secure Settings plugin to automatically lock the tablet with a password/PIN of your choosing at certain times. The tablet may not be actually off, but I'm not sure how entertained a child would be by a lockscreen they can't get past. ;)

If you go that route, I would highly recommend that you first verify the tablet is set up with a Google account that you know the credentials for. That will enable you to regain access in case someone tries too many times to bypass the lockscreen with the wrong PIN/password.
