I'm thinking about signing up with Sprint, and getting the Optimus S because it's the the cheapest phone available that can be used as a hotspot. I refuse to pay the extra $29.99 a month for the feature. Would it still be possible for me to root the phone and use it as a hotspot for free? Or would the phone already come with pre-installed with the newest update, blocking me from doing so?

Hi and welcome! Most likely your phone will come with the newest update and lcd drivers. One option would be to use the revert method in the Optimus rooting section of this forum. You could also try this.

Just make sure you read the entire introduction and install all software you need beforehand. There is word that there will be an even simpler method coming soon but this way is much less convoluted than the reverting method. If you have any problems make sure you search the thread first to see if someone else may have had the same issue. If not, post a detailed description of what you've done and any errors you are receiving and you will get help.
