Root Help: Cannot Factory Reset DInc

Hello All,

Noob here. In short, I followed most of http://androidforums.com/incredible-all-things-root/427344-how-root-2-3-4-downgrade-get-s-off.html

I didn't downgrade to Froyo. But I decided to do a Factory Reset and that's where things went south. AFTER following the above instructions, which worked fine, I went through the phone's menu system to do the Factory Reset.

When it came back, icons where dead (not the proper icons), widgets weren't working, etc. So I figured I effed up by going through the phone's menu instead of the Power+DownVolume option. Since then, I've tried EVERYTHING I could think of. Including reformatting the SD Card, re-installing ROM Manager, etc. SuperUser app is still on there, and granting apps permission as long as install said apps w/ the SD card out (unmounted or removed all together). Re-installing the ROMManager and running it (again with SD card out) prompts SuperUser and it grants permission just fine; but only after ROMManager demands that an SD card is inserted.

I was even able to re-flash ClockworkMod Recovery; but rebooting into it and selecting whatever option (any/none of them) will not work ... It just sits at a black screen with the ROMManager icon in the middle.

Now matter the method, I cannot seem to erase the SOB back to whatever clean slate I can get it into. I just want the factory default and I'll go from there. I just can't seem to shake even the simplest of configurations off with a Factory Reset (not even my background image is changing). Yet, those Factory Resets that I've attempted (with erasing all data, SD Card checkbox, etc.) all return a successful reset ... but it's not really done.

I know that's a lot of info; but I wanted to be as thorough as I could.

Any help to reset the sucker is greatly appreciated.

Ultimately, I want to root it again; but only after I've reset it w/ everything back to the way it was when I 1st opened its box.

I'm even willing to flash it; but I wasn't able to downgrade successfully to Froyo to do that.

So with all that said, it's an HTC "Droid" Incredible (not the 2), which's ADR6300. It's currently running Android version 2.3.4

I'm happy to provide additional version numbers/info. if needed.

BTW, I can't help but vaguely remembering that I may have created a partition; which may be causing my havoc. But again, it may just be the fact that I saw that phrase so many times when I reboot into Recovery. I tried erasing that cache partition; but like all other Recovery selections, the screen sits on a black background w/ only the ROMManager icon in the middle ... until I, of course, pop the battery out.
 
Sorry for the many posts; but figured seeing activity on it helps gets eyes on it AND I'm remember things after the fact. It's past 1am here and my eyes are starting to do things to each other.

The version of ClockworkMod Recovery I'm running is v5.0.2.0
Once again, I've tried almost all the options that it presents to no avail ... black screen, logo in the middle, popping battery out.
 
UPDATE:

Just tried going into HBoot and selecting Factory Reset (which I've done before). After the HTC banner is shown (white screen), it goes straight into ClockworkMod's screen with a message at the bottom, which reads:

ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.2.0
E:Invalid command argument

Any ideas? I hope all this is helping someone help me.
 
Since the initial reset, which yielded the corrupt icons and gadgets, I've had a "window" upon booting, which reads:

System UIDs Inconsistent
UIDs on the system are inconsistent, you need to wipe your data partition or your device will be unstable.

That window's button reads "I'm Feeling Lucky" which then proceeds. Prior to reformatting my SD Card, I would next get a window that told me this or that app had force closed ... the 1st one was usually Lookout (the anti-virus app).
 
UPDATE:

Decided to put PB31IMG.zip in the root directory of the SD Card and boot into HBOOT. This loaded the zip file but I got:

Main Version is Older!
Update Fail! (in red)
Do you want to reboot device?
<VOL UP> Yes
<VOL DOWN> No

Historically, I've selected yes. I've tried most of everything else, so I opted for No; which only took me back to the main HBOOT menu ... arrrgh.

So ... what the hell ... I chose "clear storage" for the 1st time from this (HBOOT) menu. Let's see what happens.
 
UPDATE:

Here's what happened next. The above "clear storage" did nothing. And I got tired of searching the forums. One thing that did stick out, ironically, is the zergRush method; which I've not tried to downgrade ... in hopes of getting s-off so I could flash Froyo or any ROM I wanted; which's kind of like a factory reset --One that I was willing to accept, any ways.

The zergRush method worked (found out that "misc" in the final step of the command shell was a partition that I simply didn't have).

The instructions lacked a step, which others might overlook. Namely, when running Unrevoked (of any kind) one must have their device in Charge Only mode. The instructions had you in Disk Drive mode to delete a zip file, but failed to switch you back.

Knowing that, Unrevoked still didn't work. The error message I got said something along the lines of "Error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?" or something like that.

So I tried it again. Same results; but it went faster. I presume because it had done most of what it needed earlier.

Definition of insanity: doing the same thing over & over again, but expecting different results.

Thinking about it all, despite that I've been on this now for HOURS, I realized that I need to boot into recovery ... HBOOT and into recovery. I think I just the equivalent of the blue screen of death (Dr. Watson). I got a triangle with an exclamation mark in it. All is frozen. So, I took the battery out and concluded that there is not a ClockworkMod Recovery install at all.

Went back to the original instructions and installed the custom recovery.

Unrevoked said it was done; but I'm back to the recovery screen that has all the blue menu items. Selecting any one of them brought me back to the oh so familiar black screen with the ROM Manager logo on it ... stuck there. Nothing. Popped out the battery.

Went into HBOOT and from there into Recovery, just to try it out one more time. This time, instead of the power button, I unknowingly pushed my home big button on my DInc ... where an iPhone's big button is. That did it. It actually selected something. In this case, it was the reboot system.

Now, I want to try and select something else using that button instead of the power button in Recovery mode. But first, let me check ... YUP, I have the SuperUser app back again.

My gut tells me to try Unrevoked now (without a custom recovery) to see if I could get s-off. And so, why the hell not. I'm doing that now. After all, it should now have a working Recovery; right?

While I wait for a reboot / a re-root / and another reboot ... I apologize for the journal-like approach to this. I'm simply hoping that this helps someone else.

OMG. I think it worked. Unrevoked is saying that it's DONE. For the 1st time, of this stage, it's actually "done."

Let me check, by rebooting into HBOOT (Power button + Volume DOWN simultaneously). It worked. I actually have s-off. NO WAY!!!!!

I ... I really don't know what to do. I can't believe I got this far. One thing to note: When it rebooted, the Recovery was an older one ... a v3.x and not the 5.x I had installed via the custom recovery process. It was in green letters (not blue like the other one) and things scrolled by with success and without a single failure message.

Now I need to know what ROM to load. I can't believe that I'm even afforded the question. How do I get back to Gingerbread and keep s-off with all root powers? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
