Help (deciding on a phone)

Hi - new here, just got a captivate but curious if an aria would suit me better or should I keep what I have. I know the processor is a no-contest (plus others), but considering I come from a samsung sync, either is an upgrade. I like the size of the aria, seems it'd be easier to manage w/ one hand. I'm not a super-user so is there anything I'm going to miss if I switch? Whichever I want something fast but again, compared to the sync, anything would be. Mostly would use my phone for the maps, facebook, emails...... new to the whole smart-phone / app world so not sure how much I"ll use it honestly.

Anybody familiar with both? Would love to hear opinions.

the aria is a nice phone and probably what you would use it for youd probably be ok. it doesnt have swype or nearly as good a camera or video recorder, and maps will load slower but i dont know how much slower. i know you cannot download google earth on the phone as its too slow to run it and thats the reason i say its slower running maps.

i would recommend at least going to an att store and trying to open it, maybe ask someone who works there how speeds are for the things you mentioned but i do think it would be ok for you
 
i try the aria for a week have is a nice small phone is hard to find anything bad about the phone but like any other phone it has his problems.

now if you are looking for a phone that you can upgrade to froyo have better speed
and a amazing screen well you will want the Captivate .

i know that you are thinking that you will not use the apps to much let me tell you that you will after you start using this phone.

try it you have 30 days to make you mind I'm sure you will fall in love with phone
 
Personally I would stay with the Captivate. Navi takes A LOT of resources to run smoothly, and it's not the difference in processor speed that concerns me, but the difference in RAM.

The Captivate has a 1ghz processor with 512mb RAM, so it's a muscle car. The Aria has a 600mhz processor (still respectable) with 384mb RAM (also respectable) but you will notice a difference in performance.

I agree with whoever said to try it out for a week and see what you think. Or even go to the store and play with the maps feature, turn on the Navi, try to send texts or listen to Pandora while the Navi is on and see how it handles it.

I have a myTouch with a 528mhz processor and 192mb RAM, and it's just SLOOW whenever the Navi is on, and I have it rooted and overclocked. It's not my processor that slows it down, it's the lack of RAM.
 
Just a note about RAM: Android is limited to 256MB regardless until 2.2 "Froyo". So any extra is going unused.
 
Thanks for the thoughts - either way I'm going back to the store (hubby's due for an upgrade) so I'll play around with Aria to see if I can tell any difference.

Quick question - why does it chime every so often? Doesn't say new message or email when I turn it on after I hear it.

Yeah, no kidding! I've been close to buying a Vibrant for a while now, but it's only about a month til Tmo gets the G2 HSPA+ phone, so I'm holding out for that. :cool:

me, too.

I'm in test mode for my 30 days, and will probably bail from Samsung, hoping for a similar spec phone made by HTC. Not being married to AT&T will be a bonus.
