help for an Android newbie

Not sure if I posted this to the correct category so forgive me.

I am thinking of getting rid of my Blackberry and going with a phone that uses the Android system.

I hear ppl say the same things about the Android system that "its so much better" but what exactly is better about it? I am thinking I will miss Blackberry Messenger so is there something else such as Windows messenger that I can use on an Android phone that works just as good as Blackberry messenger?
Also, how well does the Android system work with Google since I use gmail and the gmail calendar extensively to coincide with my Blackberry....

Blackberry Messenger is coming to Android:
Exclusive: BlackBerry Messenger will launch on Android and iOS | BGR

Google web applications work very nicely with Android, as is expected since Android is also Google software. The phone comes bundled with Gmail, and when you first turn on your phone, it will ask you to log in. Once logged in, all your mail, contacts, and calendar events will sync.

I'll let someone else go into the advantages of Android over BB. My last BB was an 8703, so it would be unfair to compare it to my Evo, but... my Evo totally blew me away.
