Help Help! GPS simply will not work

Hello all

Got a HTC Desire S. Had it about a month and generally very very happy with it. Running 2.3.3.

EXCEPT the GPS just doesn't work. It will not, ever, find a lock by itself. When wireless or mobile network is operational it will find a lock for the place where the wireless hub is or (I guess) the closest tower, respectively. But never will the GPS work. It just says 'waiting for location' followed by 'your location is temporarily unavailable'.

I spoke to my mobile operators (Orange) and they didn't know how to fix it. Did a factory reset and everything. They concluded the phone must be faulty and so replaced it. But that hasn't worked either - still no joy.

Can anyone advise?

I tried Ironass's tip here:
http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2/370084-gps-fix.html

And here's the thing: without SIM card in it found 9 sats no problem. But when I put the sim card back in - back to square one, no lock.

Cyber-biscuit to anyone who can assist.

Have you tried clearing the cache on every app that uses GPS, including any GPS processes that are running, and then doing a soft reset (removing the battery for 30 seconds), then, using an app like Compass where you can see how many satellites it locks on to, leave it for 15 minutes outside (not in a built-up area), not touching it for the whole time? Sometimes, for some reason, it seems to take some phones a lot longer to get a fix than others. Yet, when they eventually do, subsequent fixes are much, much quicker.

Can you also give us the Build number and Software Version of your phone? Menu > Settings > About phone > Software information

You're welcome.

The cache-clearing and battery removal could be superfluous to solving the problem, but it's probably worth doing anyway, at least to establish a good benchmark for trouble-shooting this kind of issue.
