Root Help! I finally Bricked it!

Android Expert
Well, I guess it is my turn now. When I turn on my phone I get the Samsung Logo and nothing else.

Here is what I did that caused it: I ran PRL update (probably OK) and I ran Firmware update. I ran every option on that updates screen except Android update. I cannot remember the third one that I ran but it said there were no updates available.

The phnne ran OK after that. I made a phone call and check the 3g. Then I rebooted the phone and here I am.

Before I do ANYTHING, I wanted to get info from the experts on the proper order or operations to perform to get the phone back. Also, which of those updates screwed it up and why? I have not done a factory reset yet since I do not want to use the USB connection. Should I try the factory reset first?

Shoud I do the ED13 recovery first? I have got to run some errands. I will check back later on this afternoon. Thanks everyone and anyone for help.

Sorry, I forgot the info: I am rooted, running ShabbyMod 0.9, EE14 modem update, phone hack, custom bootani, I got rid of Boost splash and sound at boot also.OH, and I ran the Odin update to get rid of the backdoor. All of this was done pretty much as soon as it was available and the phone has been running great. I have taken the battery out of it and letting it sit while I am gone. Check back later.

Use odin to recover. Use the root version so you can simply reinstall shabbymod after its recovered :D Ur fine.

Thank You! Can you post the link or point me to the thread for the root version? I got the shabbykernel. Not thinking too good this morning. Was it the Firmware update that did it?

none of what you ran from the phone update should have done that.
I have ran all of them multiple times.
I put out a post in the battery life thread that describes the steps I took and i increased my battery life 3x or more and the way it runs is much better as well.
You may like it as well.

Cool! Thanks Optimus. I will download the unrooted version of the ED13 Odin Recovery and try that and if that works follow the rest of the steps you have there. I was using the Rooted version and maybe my phone is too screwed up for that. I don't know why it happened. That was all that I did to the phone after i took it off the charger this morning. As I said, it continued to run properly after I did the updates. But, then i turned it off to check that too. I will let you know what happens.

No Go. The Stock Odin Recovery goes through all the motions and says PASS!

But, it never gets past the initial Samsung Screen. I did physically take out the SD card this time, but that should not matter. The phone should boot without it, correct?

I do not think that the phone will go to the factory wipe screen anymore. But it does go to the yellow downloading screen for odin.

Any ideas?

did you try taking battey out, leaving out for 50 seconds, while its out hold down power button to drain the capacitors

Thank you for the idea. I took the battery out almost an hour ago, but I did not know the capacitor drain trick. I help down the power button just now for at least a minute and put the battery back in. Turned it on the same thing.

OK this does change the phone behavior somewhat.

As I said, the battery has been out for over an hour while I was out. When I got back and read hroark13's post I have been holding down the power button and then putting the battery back in repeatedly.

Just now I connected the phone to USB to run Odin again. But now, it tells me to please connect phone. When I connect the phone to USB, it does not turn on or start charging. If I press the power button while on usb, the empty charge icon appears, but I still get the Odin prompt to connect phone. If I hit power with it not on USB and then connect, I still get the message to connect phone.

What does this mean? Anything else I can try or should I plan a trip to Radio Shack to try to return this one and get another?

As I said, All I did today was take it off the charger this morning and play around with browser, etc. Then I ran those updates. Then I checked to see that everything still worked. Then I turned it off.

Edit:

Oops sorry, forgot that I have to put phone in download mode. Sorry, been out working in the heat today, think it got to me. Anyway, Ran Odin unrooted ED13 again. no good. It says PASS! I leave the phone on the tether the entire time and the Samsung boot screen comes up when the Odin screen has the comment about reset and wait, etc. The Samsung screen never changes. I think it was Friday that I renamed the Boost Boot Animation Splash and renamed the power on noise. I have had a spinning earth boot animation for a while. I turn it off every day usually to switch batteries. I have had no problems until now.

Still no good. One interesting note that I have never heard on here is that the hard reset does not work. Power-UpVolume that is.

The Samsung logo comes up immediately and nothing else happens. The yellow downloading menu will still come up and Odin acts like it is working but nothing.

Any other ideas or advice on my trip to Radio Shack?

Very strange, unless you got a hardware error, which would be covered under warranty just tell them you rebooted and that is all its been doing since. lol

Did you try up volume+camera then power . Don't know if it'll help but it's worth a try . I'm wondering if maybe you had a power surge while it was charging and maybe corrupted the OS somehow . Hope ya get it fixed Bud .

did you flash all 3 tar files?

Yep. Boot, Pda, and Phone with the OPS file. I watched the cool video. Thanks for all the work you put into this for everybody. I was pretty confident that it would work. The Shabbykernel worked with no problem

I never tried to run this before because my phone was running fine. I cannot get it to go to the factory reset screen. The Samsung Logo will go away for 2 seconds and then come back.

Thanks, Biker. I tried it again just now. The Samsung Logo goes away for about 2 seconds and then comes back. Weird! It may have fried something on the charger. The phone ran fine until I turned it off.

Yep, me too. I have had this thing for almost 2 months. I have two days left on this months service. I plan to take it back to Radio Shack this afternoon after work. if I have to I will Buy another and keep this one like Ted Williams head in cryogenic sleep in hopes that one day we will be able to bring it back to life. Or, if they will take it back, even better. Just got to keep my SD Card. I gave the original one to a friend.

RadioSnatch wont let you return it without the sd card..... however they may swap the phone for you and remove the sd card from the phone they swap with.

They swapped it! I forgot i had paid for the insurance. The guy did not even ask about the SD card. The slot was empty. He looked like he had just got back from standing behind the store for a while.

I wonder what sort of CSI tests they perform to see what evil things I did to their phone. Of course, I did do the Odin back to stock repeatedly even though it would not boot afterwards. Is su still on it?

The manager at this Radio Shack is so slack he will probably toss it in the dumpster. They have my info, it will be interesting to see what happens. What is the worst that could happen? Cancel by service? I doubt it.

I am going to take it a little slower on Modding this phone. I got the dreaded update to EE14. Setup my Gmail to get my contacts and calendar. it downloaded the updates for the usual suspects including bloat. The TwatDroid app forceclosed after it updated. LOL. i can hardly wait to get rid of that crap. Putting my company app on it for work. Had to hand write orders today. Bummer.

I guess the first thing is to run the updated One Click Root. Then delete Bloat. And maybe do the list from Optimus Battery Life Thread.

Anybody got suggestions on the proper order to trick out a new phone?

I did it in just the order Optimus posted and have been very happy with it . No problems as far as function and much improved battery

You are not starting from the same point I was, you are on stock and got the ota update, your good, now flash the kernel and put on shabbymod with your custom tweaks and all should be good.

Man I just ran the new One Click Root! I forgot how easy it is. I think that last time I had the phone on to start. That was in the old days before the OTA. Since I ran the OTA, I followed the instructions on the video and adb rebooted the phone first and then ran the batch at the Samsung Logo. Worked like a champ.

Now I should go ahead and flash the Shabbykernel to get rid of the eavesdropping code?

Odin Shabbykernel ran pretty fast and booted up quick. I forgot and pulled it off the tether after if was completely booted, but I guess it is OK. It still said pass with the usb flapping in the breeze. I will install terminal and check it out.

I installed Titanium Backup and deleted some bloat. ahhhh that feels good.

At some point I need to put my old 16GB SD back in. It has all my Titanium Backup apps. Except for that, a lot of that stuff is probably garbage now.

I might wait until tomorrow night to install Shabbymod. It has been a long day.

Oh, and somewhere along the way it updated to the new market without telling me. The phone came with the old one, but the new one is there now.
