Root Help installing aps

Girevik

Ok, so I've got the nook rooted and have installed tha Amzaon Appstore. I was able to download and install one ap, but now everything I try says "Unable to install" when I try the app installer and "There is a problem parsing the package" with package installer. With the app instaler, it says something about archiving and unarchiving it, but I'm not seeing that option.

So what am I doing wrong? What do I need to do get the apps installed correctly?

Do you have a sdcard installed?

Do you have your usb cable unplugged from your computer?

Does Market give you errors too? Do you still have "unknown sources" checked in settings... development?

What B&N version are you running and what rooter did you use?

When you get the option between app and package installer, choose package installer. That one works for me.

Yes, I have an SD card.

No, the usb is not plugged in

I have not tried the market yet. I will try that next.

I have B&N version 1.4, and beleive it was manualnooter 5.01.24.

Try clearing Data and Cache for the Amazon App Store. Setting | Apps | Amazon

This works for many download / install issues for both the Amazon App Store and the Market.

Sorry, should have mentioned I already did that.

Also, just to clarify, I am rooted but running the nook software. I have NOT flashed a rom onto the nook.

Ok, it looks like stuff from the Market is coming fine. It doesn't even ask me which method to use. I'm still getting the error from the Market (although I was able to get the market it's self).

I'm trying find the "allow 3rd party" setting to confirm it, but can't find it. Where do I go for that?

From the rooting howto for 1.4.1, step 11:

To enable 3rd party apps to load, you must open the NookColor Tools program. There's a magic check box that enables 3rd party apps at the top. By default, the text is white on white, so impossible to see. Select that box twice - to uncheck then recheck (toggle) it. When you are done, it should be checked.

Ok, did see that and was wondering about not seeing the text. I did uncheck and re-check (a couple of times actually).

But this is kind of moot now. I'm on to bigger and badder problems.

One downside to rooting stock B&N firmware is that some app menus display as white-on-white. This is, from what I've read over on XDA, due to some bad framework setting decisions made by B&N (assuming you'd only ever use THEIR apps). There is a fix, of sorts, for the NT, but I haven't tried it on my NC yet. It involves editing the resources for a background image (.png, I think) to a neutral color.
