Help Help, just picked up a used GNex and get "no service".

Hey all, just picked up a new to me GSM Gnex, currently I have a i9250m and picked up a i9250 from a seller on Ebay. My "old" phone came from the previous owner rooted with AOKP rom, I am on tmo with it as well...so I get the new phone today and figure it'll be as simple as just swapping the sim out as I did when I went from my Sensation to the GNEX, but it didn't go as smooth. I installed the old working sim in the new phone and only get a "No Service" notation on the bottom of the lock screen and the time also is staying "wrong" starting at midnight after a battery pull.

Might it be something as simple as a setting to get her up and rolling?

Thanks in advance for any help.

That doesn't sound good. If you go to Settings > About Phone, you should see a baseband version (post it for future reference). If you go to status, you should also be able to see your IMEI number (don't post it, all that's important is that you see one).

If either or both say "Unknown", that means there is an issue with the cellular radio. If that is the case, its a very expensive repair if its not under warranty as it means that the motherboard is physically defective.

All hope is not lost....IMEI number is there and also the Baseband i9250xxlj1, i am on wifi with it and just updated the OS to 4.2.2

Kernel is 3.031-g9f818de
build JDQ39

any other ideas?

Maybe it requires a change to the apn settings based on your service? Unfortunately, I don't know the T-Mobile ones. :(

This doesn't sound great. Sadly all of my ebay phone transactions have been without issue, and I was able to pop in a SIM like you assumed you could.

In addition to the above, I would contact the seller through the ebay messaging system and ask him non-accusatory questions. I think that the sooner you begin a traceable message exchange with him about problems with the transaction via the ebay messaging system, the better the possibility of getting a ruling in your favor IF the transaction goes through the official ebay complaint system.

Hope it turns out well for you.

(BTW, regarding APN, my tmobile experiences with 3-5 phones is that it will auto fill your APN. Maybe I have just been lucky so far though)

Ok, 35 minutes on the phone with TMO, they sent me to the google nexus help line and I spent 15 minutes there....and they sent me to Samsung whom I spent 30 minutes with (yes I know my IMEI by heart now..lol) and it turns out the phone is not a US phone, the last tier 2 tech at Samsung said I need to find out what country it was intended for and call them to have it unlocked....hmmmm. I will contact the ebay seller and see what the deal is...it was never disclosed that this was the case.

Otherwise short of calling every samsung help desk world wide until my IMEI shows up on their list, does anyone think rooting and installing a custom ROM will get the radios up and working, as long as it is not a hardware problem?

If you want to go that route, you could try unlocking the bootloader and flash the takju firmware and that might work, but I can't give any certainty that it would work. :(

Does the listing specifically say "unlocked" or that it works in the USA? If so, he was (perhaps unintentionally) inaccurate in his listing.

Just sent him an email....lets see what he does. I will admit the phone is in great shape physically, I really would like to get it working as opposed to sending it back to him....but I suppose there are other fish in the sea.

Good seller responded quickly, he said it worked before he shipped it and was sorry about it not working and he offered to pick it up, I told him I would really like to try to make it work and if it was ok with him going to try some software tweaks to see what I could do.

Just for curiosity, have you tried preforming factory reset and then trying to reactivate it. Maybe that would help clean something up. You also mentioned it was running a custom rom. Try installing the takju firmware if the reset doesn't work.

He does say "no returns". But the title of the auction is: Samsung Galaxy Nexus GT-I9250 - 16GB - Titanium silver (Unlocked) Smartphone

So, while he can argue that he disclosed "no returns" and you bid on it with full knowledge of this. You can counter with you were willing to take that risk on an UNLOCKED phone as the auction clearly states in BOTH the title and details.

I hope it gets resovled amicably and quickly for both of you by discussing it directly with one another. But if it goes to ebay/paypal as a dispute, stick to the fact that it in no uncertain terms you were bidding on an unlocked device.

I would also consider getting an online chat print out with one of the carriers (or another authoritative third party) you spoke with telling you that the phone is locked. This will help your case if this comes to a discussion with ebay. Basically, be prepared to build your case that saying this device is "unlocked" was false advertising - therefore you are entitled to a refund.

Update: He offered to take the phone back but instead we decided to give me some money off the price and I kept it...I figure I can use it around the house as the internet works fine and I will continue to see what I can do to fix it.. Thanks for the help.

This is the part that I would be worrying about.

"The phone fully powers on and and has a fully functioning touch screen and shows that it is charging but does not actually charge. Its USB port is brand new. For this reason I am selling it as is, no returns. It comes with the phone, battery door & 1,500 mah battery. I was told it may have a bad power management integrated circuit. Again, This phone shows it is charging but does not actually charge."

You.can buy 2 batteries and an external charger. Never need to charge the phone.
