Root Help! Loading CM9 ROM/Kernel

Hello,

I just upgraded from an Evo 4G to the S2 (bought rooted on eBay) and am looking to load the latest version of CM(9?) onto it.

I went through my first time putting a ROM a phone about a year and half ago on the EVO, and I practically had to be taken step by step to get through it because I am such a noob at the rooting/ROM process.

Hopefully, it wont be too difficult for me to do it this time around with some help.

ALSO, Does CM9 have the hacked 4g hotspot???
Any other good ROMs out there, (must have a hacked 4G hotspot)???

Noob question, do all ROMs have a Kernel included with it?

Can somebody write out a quick step by step of what I need to do to install, (dumb it down as much as possible). Things I need to download, wipe, things I need to do before hand, etc. Lehmans terms please :)

I'd rather get advice from you pro's before I do something stupid or brick my phone.

Big thank you to anyone who replies.

i have just written up a howto for the s2 for boost

it should be the same for the sprint version

Thanks for the reply. Like I said, I'm extremely new to rooting/ putting ROMs on phones. It all seems a bit confusing on where to start and certain words or abbreviations that I don't know what they mean.

Also, does CM9 have the hacked 4G hotspot?

Okay, thanks. Does CM9 have the wireless 4G hotspot hack?

Also, your walk through seems a little different than what I did with my EVO a year ago. I have no clue what ODIN is. I just remember, downloading a few files and putting them in a folder, then dragging them onto my phone via the computer... then doing a bunch of stuff on the phone, like wiping things and clearing things and installing the files.

Sorry for being such a NOOB :(

There is no need for a hack on cm9
The odin file is self explanatory
but you have to odin flash the sprint firmware first to gain root
it is just point and click

Who is your carrier???

Sprint. I bought the phone on eBay, and it is already rooted. With no roms on it. It appears to have CWM 5.0 and Rogue ET Recovery already on it.

make sure it is safe to use those 2 recoverys to install cm
there s some bugs aperantly that could possily brick the phone

but yeah all you really need is to drop the cm9 zip and the gapps on your sdcard and install em

make sure you wipe cache and data...... cm don t play nice with leftovers

How do I figure out if it's safe to use the 2?

No cm has the hotspot baked in. What he's trying to say is there is no need to hack it because it isn't the sprint hotspot. it already just works

Thanks, Rxpert83. You were one of the few that helped me get my Evo Root on, over a year ago.

Is everything Zombu2 saying correct? Should I follow his tutorial?

Well, everything in the rooting world is device specific. So while I'm the guy to go to for most things HTC, Samsung phones are completely different and use different methods to get things done. I've personally never had to use odin, so I don't know what to expect with it.

It should be noted he is on boost, so that guide may not help you at all

I will point you to the all things root guide for this device.

It doesn't look like its been nearly as well maintained as our EVO 4G guide was, but I would draw your attention to this in particular:

I'm still unaware what ODIN is, it appears to be a software of some sort. That you install on your computer to...??? put the ROM in???? I'm so wrong and I know it.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I guess I'll just have to see how it goes tomorrow when I try it out. I'll do some reading on the links you gave me tonight.

Thats why I suggested this thread:http://androidforums.com/epic-4g-to...clockworkmod-flash-roms-unroot-16-videos.html

Its got videos like that one that will at least show you how to flash a ROM.. Maybe you can apply that to cm

How to flash the AE Mod Rom on the Samsung Epic Touch 4G - YouTube

Actually if he would have read the instructions it says right there download the fi03 sprint file it is a auto odin file with everything in it
it also explains how to get into download mode

but as he already has a recovery i told him to make sure those are safe to use since the s2 phones have this nasty emmc bug that can brick it

all he has to do is fire up his recovery and flash cm9 and gapps

oh and don t forget to wipe cache and data (cm does not play nice with leftovers from other roms)

This video was VERY helpful. But I didn't see ODIN anywhere in it, so I am assuming that using ODIN is optional or just another way to root a phone?

Dude
since you already have a recovery just put the cm9 file on the sdcard and the gapps and flash it

it is that simple :P
