help me upgrade and overclock

hi i bought a 2nd hand htc desire and i am wondering how do i upgrade the operating system as its currently running android 2.2 and alos how do i overclock the phone
can we be simple as possible plz as i'm not really confident with this sort of thing
thanks in advance

I'd rather recommend the sticky threads (guides and faqs) on this forum (desire - all things root). They are up to date. The authors are here to help you out if you get a problem, and the first piece of advice is always read the guides and faqs!

Don't use ROM Manager!

Also, the reason we keep pointing people in the direction of the stickies, is that you actually have to understand what you are doing in order to keep your cool if something unexpected happens, rather than running off on a wild Google-search trying every piece of advice you come across.

By having read up on the subject beforehand, you'll know what to do and where to search for an answer (here!).

Good luck!

ok after much reading i'v given up and juts dont get how to do it
so as overclocking is out of the way :(
how do i update the software ie form 2.3.3 to something newer?
thanks

Don't give up!

It took me a good week to understand enough to go ahead and root. Keep going back over it. Your first step is rooting, and to do that going from 2.3 you want to use the Revolutionary tool. Focus on reading up on this as a first step.
2.3.3 is the latest version that you could have on your phone without rooting.

Over clocking is easy. Once you have a custom Rom or a custom kernel, a simple application overclocks for you. You just have to s-off and flash custom Rom and or kernel first

ok so i have rooted the phone can someone recomend me a good rom as i have now had three and all have featured glitches thas just makes the phone Cr@p to use
thanks for the help

Which ones have you tried, and what were the glitches?

Easiest as a first ROM is usually Teppic74's prerooted Sense ROM. It's very much like stock, but with support for more advanced features.

Of most use is it if you have partitioned your SD. Try reading the stickies and faq's to know how to do it...

Can you tell us exactly what you did to install the ROM, step-by-step?

Also, can you read the SD card from the phone? If you've no mobile signal and also can't read the card that could indicate a specific problem known as a "usb brick" (not a true brick, as it is fixable).

If you are ever in a state where you can't get into Android, you can mount the sd card over usb when running recovery and copy a file onto it that way. Or you can always restore the nandroid backup that you did make before flashing the ROM (I hope)? But please answer the questions above, so we can work out what went wrong and whether we need to do something else to fix it.

sorry the phone is now up and working i completly wiped the phone then re-installed and it all work
basically am looking for a rom that looks standard but has a few extra features
any help appreciated
thanks

Glad it's working now :)

By "standard" I guess you mean "HTC Sense"? The closest would be a rooted stock ROM, such as one of Teppic74's - these are pure stock, only rooted and with some optional extras. Or if you want standard Sense with more tweaks and extras added then you could look at LeeDroid.

The All Things Root Guide sticky, in the root subforum, has a link to the XDA thread linking to most available ROMs (linked from my sig).

hi mate where can i get Teppic74's from as i googled it and all the links on the xda website are dead
thanks for the help

Ah, multiupload.com is down.

The best would probably be to send a message to teppic74, though I'm sure he knows the site is down (as it looks like it's not recent). If desperate I'm sure I have a copy of the Froyo version (not the Gingerbread one), though I prefer not to get into the habit of distributing someone else's ROM.

Hmm, I'd normally say just send a personal message via the forum. However, he's not been active on XDA since October last year, and hasn't been in this forum since August (I've checked his profile on both), so it seems unlikely that will work.

You could try one of the other rooted stock ROMs. But I'll copy what I have to somewhere you can access it and send you a link.
