I just ordered a Droid Eris because my previous phone hadn't been working well. But I got this phone and it is a complete and total disaster. It is so slow, and when I go to type something it will stop typing or either put the next letter at the beginning of the word, or it will freeze up. What is going on? I am really going to go insane. Help PLEASE, this phone is completely not useable.

The skipping around when typing sounds like a defective trackball problem.
Mine does that to me sometimes, too. Does it scroll to the left by itself also?
This is a widespread problem with the Eris.

Did you buy it from a third party? Or do you still have warranty on it?

I couldn't type on my Eris until I put Swype on it.

To speed the phone up you have to root it and install a custom ROM.

Turn off text prediction, spell checking and vibrate on keypress - all of those things will help speed up it's ability to respond to your typing.

BBerryhill0 has already given the best answer for fixing what's wrong with your phone - root it. That makes a HUGE difference on the usability of the phone.
