Root Help needed with flashing a new rom

Okay, here's my problem. I've had my HTC Desire for quite a while now. I originally rooted it but it's been such a long time since I did it, I'm having trouble remembering what I did. I know I created a goldcard at one point :)

I'm currently using an old LeeDroid Froyo rom (which has served it's purpose up to this point). I'm having some issues with not being able to download updates in the Google PlayStore with wifi (although I can access internet with wifi) but I am able to download updates through data so I figured it's time to get a more recent rom.

I want something stable without having to worry about storage space (currently, I've only got 30MB left of internal memory free). The things that are important to me are: 1) phone works, 2) text works, 3) camera and video works, 4) battery life/performance.

This is what I think I need to do:
1) find a new rom to use (since I'm looking for stability, I'm guessing a Gingerbread rom).
2) Place it on my sd card
3) Reboot phone into recovery
4) Wipe data or dalvik cache
5) Find the new rom and flash it

Is that right? Sounds almost too easy.
Just wondering if I'll have a problem because I rooted such a long time ago. I think I'm still S-ON - will that be a problem to flash a new rom?

Thanks!

Don't forget to take a titanium backup of apps if you want to keep them, a backup of sms (recommend sms backup+) and a nandroid backup from recovery before you do anything

S-off is not a requirement. Have a,read of the rooting faq in the "all things root guide" sticky thread

Thanks. Managed to flash the GingerVillain 3.3 rom last night - the flashing went find enough... but it was all the other stuff that's been a headache.
I mistakenly restored some apps with Titanium Backup that started to cause a whole bunch of errors so I reflashed the rom. Things were good but I didn't like the camera that came with the rom so I had to remove it and flash a miui camera.

Started to load back up my apps but I'm finding that I've lost a lot of space even though I did the a2sd cachesd in the terminal emulator. It seems like I have much less room than on my old froyo rom despite having probably less than half of the apps I used to have installed.

To top it off, I lost all wifi, data, and phone connection earlier today. I suspect it had something to do with the power control toggle widget. When I looked in my wireless network settings, the Airplane Mode was enabled. Each time I tried to disable it, it would not save and it would revert back to Airplane mode. My APN settings were gone and the mobile options were greyed out so I couldn't enter new APN settings. I was finally able to connect to a wifi connection and that seems to have cleared things up... seems a little too buggy though.

My big concern now is space... I've got about 30MB left of internal space. Perhaps I didn't do the a2sd correctly. I've got tons of room left on my sd card, think I have to go read up some more faqs threads

Titanium Backup and Quick System Info can both tell you how much of you sd-ext (a2sd space) you are using. That's a good quick check as to whether it's working.

If very little is being used, try opening the terminal emulator and typing

su
a2sd reinstall

after that (when the phone has rebooted) do the

su
a2sd cachesd

again.

Thanks. After my last post and reading more of the faqs on the a2sd, I took a look at quick system info and it seemed like I had lots of free a2sd memory so I took a chance and used the terminal emulator to do the a2sd cachesd again and I think it's better. My internal memory went from 30MB free to 110MB free.

I'll start downloading some more apps and see if it's still a problem.
