hello, new to custom roms but I have knowledege of modding xboxs etc.. so I'm sure i'll get it eventualy ! I bought a phone from ebay which has a custom rom on it but it keeps switching and doing wierd things so I want to put another custom or the original rom back on. i dont know how it was unrooted or if it is, dont know what custom rom is on and dont know how to find out. i think I get how to reflash the rom but not sure what to do first.

Any help will be much appreciated !

To find out what is already on your phone, go to Settings, About Phone, it will tell you what version of Android you are on and you can deduce which ROM you are on from it as well. To find out what custom recovery you have. Hold the power button down and from the options that come up choose reboot, then a second option should come up and choose Recovery, once in there you can describe or find out which one it is.

If it's doing "weird" things keep in mind it could be a hardware fault. Personally I would not be tempted to flash a custom rom on a phone that was not working as that would leave you no option to return it as faulty later.

I'd try and contact the seller and say you are not happy with it, rather than trying to fix it by flashing other roms when you don't really know what's wrong with it in the first place. The "doing wierd things" may be the reason they sold it.

If I was going to flash a custom rom, I'd at least like to know the machine was working fine to start with. Just my thoughts.

Well, I'd Nandroid backup first, try another custom rom and if if still does 'weird things' * then restore the Nandroid and take it back.

*What weird things btw?

If there is a hardware problem, is there no chance that a flash may fail and leave the OP snookered?

If it's only a ROM flash the risk shouldn't be too bad. Take a nandroid first, and if the ROM flash fails restore the nandroid. You won't hard brick the device flashing a ROM.

If there's a hardware problem then running an RUU is riskier, as those reflash the radio as well, and if the phone were to glitch during that it could end very badly indeed.

But yes, it would help to know more about what it is doing, as that might help us identify the best solution.
