Alright so the Linux cd worked and it sbf'd without any problems. Still not sure what happened with RSD not being able to recognize the device. Thanks for all the help, and I completely agree that we should learn to sbf before rooting! Now I have a "like new" phone vzw sent me with gingerbread already on it. Can't wait to root it and get rid of all the stock garbage.

Awesome! I was running the old apex on froyo, and wanted to continue with it on gingerbread. Any tips on rooting stock gingerbread? I'll check out the newb guide also for rooting because after half a day of stock gingerbread, I realized why I rooted in the first place! Thanks again for all the help !

Yea, I love Apex.
You cant root stock GB from VZW.
You have to SBF back to Froyo, the root Froyo using Z4Root, then install D2bootstrapper, then install the 2 part zip to ger rooted GB, then install teh deodoxer zip to be deodoxed, then install Apex as a custom rom and you are good to go
