I purchased my DHD locked to Three about 6 months ago on eBay, and all has been fine with it. I have been waiting patiently for 2.3 update and yesterday I saw the news it had been rolled out for Three but still nothing for me when I check!

Yea, you are not branded. Should have got your update months ago. Have you tried doing a manual update.. settings > about phone > software updates?
 
Haha only every day, but no joy I'm afraid.

I though even if I was unbranded that the 2.3 rollout might be by IMEI and that might be assigned to a carrier but obviously not.

So whats the best way for me to go about updating now then? And anyway to do so without losing everything? :(
 
Weird.

I've heard of a factory reset helping, but I think that was if the update had downloaded, but not installed. I don't know if you want to give that a go?
 
You should have or will be getting the update soon (not exactly today but soon), even though your phone is running unbranded firmware as it stands the phone can still be locked to 3 network and can still be running a 3 network Customer ID (aka CID) the latter is definitely questioned as part of the OTA supply of your firmware. If the CID is 3 specific then if you had been supplied the unbranded version when that was released it would have failed to install. Just be patient however if you haven't received it by the end of next week I'd be popping into your local 3 store as a first point of call...

Even if you had SuperUser access and were rooted you will/would still get the OTA notification. The only issue that would arise is when you came to install it if you had anything other than the stock recovery image such as ClockworkMod Recovery.
 
All sorted now! kind of... After hours of playing yesterday evening.

So I performed a factory reset and still no updates found, I also tried using 1.32.405.6 RUU to reload but this threw up Error 131: Customer ID Error and said I needed to download the right version for my phone (even though it was already running this version)! I also tried an RUU I found for the most recent Gingerbread version but had the same error.

Next, I thought I would try the RUU with a GoldCard to get around the CID check, but I was having no luck with this after endless tries using the GoldCard Tool and manually with the hex editor.

So finally I decided to just go for it and root, it all went smoothly and I'm now running the most recent LeeDroid and very happy with it so far (not sure which changes are Gingerbread and which are the ROM but all very nice).

All's well that ends well.

Good for you burleyboy! Glad things are sorted now. Your story sounded so much like mine =) Now your rooted, the worlds your oyster, enjoy.
