Help! Ota failure!!!
Here's the latest...

I was rooted using Pete's Motorola Root Tools. Before I got the OTA I unrooted. I finally was able to download the OTA file. When I ran the install it would start and then flash an exclamation point in a triangle and then just reboot my phone. I tried to reroot my phone but it says that it can't. I keep getting this message when I run the root software again.

"adb could not be granted root access. Try again from start but if the problem continues, check your version of GingerBread - hopefully you don't have a version where this exploit was fixed."

Now what? Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions?

When you were rooted, did you freeze or delete any apps? Also, did you ever update your radio/kernel with a cheesecake update or flash anything with an updated kernel/radio? If you did any of those things, the OTA will fail. Don't worry about it. You will still get ICS when it is released for the Bionic.

No I didn't do any of that. I think I might have removed a game or something. No system files though.

ICS is gonna take another year or so probably.

1) removing a game is still
...freeze or delete any apps?
- so you can't say no, I didn't.

2) The OTA update looks for a lot of things, called pre-install checks, before actually installing anything. The list is very long, but here is an idea:

the update script that runs when the update first starts has 1188 lines of code to do nothing but check your existing system apps - using an algorithm of some sort (quite possibly comparing MD5 sums) before it ever does anything else.

1188. Half of those lines are devoted to advancing the progress bar, so that means 594 lines are devoted to checking apps an files on your BIONIC. that;s 594 different files that hte update script verifies that you not only have but that it is the right version.

just ask anyone who replaced the built-in Swype with the latest Beta - they had to revert before they could apply the update.

And that's not all of the items that are checked either. There are plenty more in other areas of that script.

What Groid meant was that if you had ever updated to any of the leaked updates then you were not going to be able to apply this update, but that eventually you will. however, in your case, since you actually went and deleted an app instead of using TiBu and just freezing it, you may be SOL until you get that app back where you deleted it from.

Oh, and ICS is not gonna take a year - I'm betting we have it by March.

NO. Factory restore removes all your data, sign ins, accounts, etc. It will not restore apps that you have removed.

You need to get that app back on your system.
