Help Help! Phone won't connect to PC

I am trying to connect my HTC EVO Shift to my PC but it doesn't recognize that it's connected. When I plug it in, my computer tells me that it's hooked up. But then I right click on search and click explore. When I click on removable disk (E), my computer tells me to insert a disk into Drive E. On my phone, under, settings>connect to PC, the default connection type is disk drive.

What am I doing wrong?

If you have a usb icon in your notification bar on your phone, drag down the bar and tap on usb connected. You should then get a screen asking if you want to connect as mass storage. Tap this and accept the dialog that follows. It will unmount your sd card/partition and allow the PC to access it.
