Help please...I think I softbricked my phone...

Hello, fist off here's what happened leading up to this situation...

thought I am probably best to start a new thread for this newer, even more serious problem.
As you can see from the last post, after having problems with a ROM I flashed I thought I would factory reset, wipe clean cache and boot my nandroid back on. Therein the problem lies, I got a MD5 mismatch on the backup so I went back and selected reboot (I guess this where the mistake is because I guess factory wipe etc must wipe the OS?)
So anyway it is now I believe "softbricked" just stays on the boot screen, not the bit with the splash, just the bit that says sgs2 i9100. I can't get back into recovery mode or safe mode, but I can get into download mode. Only problem is I don't really understand how to use Odin (program pretty self explanatory but all the "how to's are talking about flashing new kernels etc but the way I unlocked I kept the same kernel).
Could anyone give me a simple step-by-step of how to get out of my predicament if Odin is the way forward.
 
Flashing a firmware with Odin is the exact same process as rooting with cfroot.
So download some firmware from samfirmware, any gt-i9100 will do for the sake of getting your phone running

Now extract this so you get a .tar and put the .tar in the pda box of Odin and tick next to pda, do not tick or untick any other box. Now connect your phone while in download mode and press start.
 
Just reread your thread and noticed you didn't use the cfroot method to root. That could be where your problems came from. The only root method I'll recommend is the cfroot one as others tend to cause problems down the line.

If you do need to flash a stock firmware, to get you back on track, as Shotty suggests, then you could try the ICS, LPG, unbranded, stock, firmware and flash it using Odin and the instructions under the heading, "My firmware is not eligible for ICS yet but I want it now!", in post #1, here.

Now, dare I try and re-flash another decent ROM again...
Well spotted Ironass, I was just testing, making sure y'all paying attention, well done ;)
I assume now that I have done that I am no longer rooted? I cant see superuser anymore. Is there a way to tell if I am rooted? If I'm not I will follow that guide and hopefully will get it right.
Looking at different ROMs they are all zip files. does that mean that Odin is only used to root and flash stock rom and CWM should be used for pushing custom ROMs?

Congratulations SavageRobot! :congrats:

To check if you are rooted, you can install Root Checker from the Play Store, which is mentioned in post #2 of that Rooting Guide.
 
No problem mate.

You will no longer be rooted as you flashed stock firmware. So just root again using the modest guys (ironass's) guide and it will put you in a good position with a reliable recovery to start flashing roms again.
 
Thank you so much - I thought I'd well and truly screwed up my phone but reading this thread has saved me!
I did a nandroid backup and didn't check so ended up loading a HTC backup onto my Samsung GS2. WHat a nightmare- phone completely unresponsive. Having read your thread I got it into download mode and loaded stock firmware through Odin. I now have a stock phone again ready to root.
I'll be more careful next time....:)
 
Haha, kudos. You sound like you were panicking like I was. Glad my mistake could be of use to someone ;)
Good luck with the rooting, I'm now running rootbox 1.6, very nice rom.
