Root Help, please!(Mod/ROM issue)

Ok, first off, been away from this site for a VERY long time. I was very active way back when Shabby got things started and gradually drifted back into the offline world due to college. I've logged back on a few times just to lurk around and see what's been going on with the Prevail development. All I got to say to that is HOLY F***! lol It's like I stepped into a time machine and fast forwarded to the future and now I'm just overwhelmed and sorta lost!

So here is my problem: Went kayaking two weekends ago, lost my phone and yesterday I got a new Prevail and decided to use Caeadas' "Rooting the Prevail for Dummies (written by a dummy)" guide. After a very long day of setting up my phone and making sure I Odin'd, CWM, CTmod w/KK 2.5 making sure it ran correctly with the extra memory I discovered that the compass and GPS does not work. I searched for posts and threads on fixing these two issues but after about 2 hours last night and another hour today I've come here to ask for assistance. I am assuming there is no fix for the GPS because I've read BloodDawn's "[ROM] CTMod 3.6 (05/08/12)" thread and towards the end(pages 75+) of the posts someone also gave up on trying to fix it.

I want to be able to keep all my apps, the KK 2.5 kernal, and my partition sd w/ virtual memory that I got on my phone right now but find another mod/rom that has a working compass and GPS. I already backed up using CWM and saved a copy to my laptop so can I just go ahead and flash another mod/rom? Which mod/rom should I use? (EDIT): Are there any other options I have as well?

I appreciate any advice and/or help coming my way and thanks!

Hi and welcome back Viet. I'm running CM7 with the KatoKernel and don't have any issues with GPS or compass.

I thought I had read where someone had came up with a fix for the compass issue on CTMod. Hmmm, maybe someone will post it if it's out there.

Good 2 see you back, it's been a while.:D

Hey Wetbiker! Good to see you're still around! Yea, I was thinking of trying CM7 . Does it allow swap ram and overclocking? I will be able to put all my apps back on my phone with my CWM backup right after flashing CM7? If so, I probably might need a walkthrough on how to select which backup because I saw like 4 options through advanced backup.

Sorry I'm asking such elementary questions just want to make sure.

Your probably gonna have to install all of your apps manually. I've tried restoring apps when switching from CTMod to CM7 from a sd-ext backup and it didn't work.

It does allow swap. Here the thread.

I'm using the KatoKernel w/o the ext. . I made a 2048 ext on my card and use S2E from the market. I've found that there is less lag doing it that way. ;)

I used the ext version and it worked fine until I started running themes:eek:.

Here's another ROM that you may wanna check out. It's MIUI based on Hroarks CM7. It uses the OC'ed KatoKernels too. Make sure you read. There is an issue with the lockscreen when applying themes. It can be fixed by installing Milocker though.

on ctmod 3.6 and kouma 2.5 with NO network location on only GPS and accurate with in 30ft (or is it meters?)
just change "North America" to "us" in gps.conf is all I did

Where do I navigate to, to change this file?

in es file or root browser (what ever file manager u use) edit /etc/gps.conf
on first line it say
xxxx=North_America.xxxxxxx

change ONLY "North_America" to "us"

xxxxx=us.xxxxx
don't add spaces.
I'll kill you

plus you're gps might not work

you can get big fancy gps.conf file (kouma or hroark or someone posted theirs recently) but that all I did.also in Google maps are you going to settings and sign in and allow the 3 notification triangle permission thingies?

NTP_SERVER=us.pool.ntp.org

Thanks man! It worked!!! I was trying to get GPS to work on an app called Waze. I do use Google Maps too kinda funny because that's how I lost my phone in the first place! Was kayaking and pulled out my phone to check my location and forgot to secure it to me , went to take my first paddle stroke and it fell into the water! I should be able to make it work for Google maps too now. Oh and also , when I went to the gpf.cfg file mine read "america" instead of North America, strange.

Hopefully navigation with apps doesn't go haywire with a broken compass lol.

Thank you so much for your help again!

ya they differ ROM to ROM on location but it should always be changed to "us"anyways. be sure to test with wifi off and network locations off.other wise you might not really be using gps.

Aw crap, just tested it with wifi and network locations off and gps is not working

is/did you
-gps.conf is same as mine
(leave blank line after last line.idk if it matters here but mine got it and I know build.prop requires blank line at end too.
-gps.conf permissions rw-r-r
-network locations off, wifi off
-gps on, mobile data on
-what ROM are you on (I use ctmod)
-is maps in /data/app and not /system/app
-if on cm7 do you have /data-ext mapfix kernel/fix
-are you outside and have cell reception
-open maps app and settings-> sign in and check notification bar for three red triangles? click each and hit allow (don't re enter Google account just allow then hit rest notifications allow then back arrow out and it should say signed in.)
if you don't remember notification part go to settings-manage apps-maps and clear data.then reopen maps and settings-sign in/allow

ALWAYS REBOOT AFTER EDITING GPS.CONF OR ANY OTHER INTERNEL FILE/FOLDER

Ugh, ok I think I'm going to have to wave a white flag here and just flash to another mod like CM7. Need to have gps and compass for this upcoming weekend so no other choice.

Thanks for all the advice and help guys.

With cm7 make sure you go to
Menu> settings> location & security> gps source and choose internal... Otherwise you might have similar problems

And also use the mapsfix (or katokernel. 4 which is mapsfix+oc)

Yep. If you install the KatoKernel, the mapfix for CM7 is not needed. If you do install it after you have installed the Katokernel it will remove the OC. ;)

Also, slowly turn up your cpu. Some cannot handle the 946MHz. Mine can't. It can only handle 900MHz and running w/o crashing. The kernel comes preset at 800MHz.

Here is a thread that will help you with your cpu settings.

Agreed... Mine can only handle 900 also... But it is one of the first one's made so that prolly the reason... Had this phone as soon as it hit the shelf... lol...

Yep. I got mine the when they first came out too.:ridinghorse:
Did you try noop with smartassv2 maxed 946 min 120?

i just tried it the other day and it seems to be doing quite well. No random shut downs. With sio and lionheart settings i could only max out 925. Also i think a lot has to do with the rom. For me with cm7 sio with lionheart max 925 works best with ctmod noop with smartassv2 cpu maxed out at 946.88 is doing quite well .......so far that is. I don't know it if would help you any. Just figured id share what is working for me. :D

LOL, I've tried them all. No justice. I can get it to run @ 925 as long as I don't tax the cpu 2 bad. 900 is good enough 4 me. :D

Not sure if I have KatoKernal installed, I'm guessing I do cause I tried changing the Mhz settings in both Voltage Control and CM7 settings and it didn't work. Do I have to reflash the kernal to get oc and if I do will it erase everything on my phone? I've include a screenshot of my "about" phone below. Thanks :)

Kato kernel had to be flashed after the ROM, (the ROM has it's own kernel) and it will not erase your data...
