Root help please ..:please read......

Ok let me start by saying I'm new to all this so gentle lol

If someone could find the time to explain the rooting process the unroot process and everything in between id really appreciate it ...

Reason I wanna learn well first I luv Android phones and I luv how you can customize them..but even more than that is what comes next...

I recently bought a HTC desire a8181 used and its a great phone and it came rooted I of course know nothing about this so when I.got the phone I cleared everything including titanium backup ... I'm stuck with this rom kernel 2.6.32.15 piranha flo himself @ macbook#16 software Aurax tsense 7.9 froyo de791 by neophyte browser version web kit 3.1....(this rom don't let me send picture messages always says generic network failure)

Now I wanna put a bigger SD card in but I can't when I put the new 8gig card the phone gets stuck on HTC screen won't power on all the way.... so I put in reg SD card powers all the way on so I figured the rom is on the SD so I copied the reg SD to the new SD but still didn't work....so if anyone can help please do ....

I wanna know about rooting so I could find the stock rom and have it like a normal person lol and so I could change them and really enjoy my phone please help if you find the time

Did you partition the card before installing that ROM? Sense ROMs using a later version than came with the Desire have to put part of the ROM on an ext format partition. A PC cannot see that, so you can't just copy the contents.

If that is what's happened, partition the new card in the same way, take a nandroid backup with the old card, copy everything you can to the new card, including the nandroid and any hidden files and folders (names start with .), then change cards, go into recovery and restore the nandroid. That will refill the partition on the new card.

Look in the sticky post All Things Root Guide - there are a number of guides and faqs there. Have a study, then people will be happy to explain anything that's unclear.

See I know so little about this stuff I don't even know how to partition the SD card and I bought the phone used so I didn't change the rom myself so I don't even know where to start I tried checking the link you provided but like every other place the information is just scattered everywhere so I wanted someone to explain it from start to finish on here lol but Im just gonna sell the phone too much for me to do without the right instructions but thanks again for trying to help next time I just got to make sure I know what I'm buying lol

Read the "rooting faq" and "root memory faq" in the link Hadron supplied.

Please read them because I put a lot of info in there so we don't have to keep explaining it to people. To be fair if I had to explain it to you, id write those faqs.

There is no way someone can just blurt out what you want. It's a technical subject and the faqs are designed specifically for people like you.

If you want a stock rom it sounds like you might want to try an RUU which is an .exe file that updates a phone to a HTC stock android version.

However, you might have custom internal memory partitions on the phone, and that won't allow you to fit a stock rom back onto the phone, without some complicated noob-unfriendly repartitioning.

Do you have any apps installed that will tell you the size of your system and data partitions (like Titanium which you deleted) as it would indicate whether you have a stock HBOOT partition or a custom partition?

Thanks again guys I'm gonna go over those links again ...its just my phone has been extra sluggish lately and I don't even have apps besides instagram I downloaded tb again and I got superuser ....another quick question since I don't have the stock rom can I just get ice cream sandwich and not worry about anything afterwards ... I just think its the rom that don't let me send pic messages

I'd suggest a stable gingerbread rom rather than ICS - ICS roms are still a bit work in progress and wouldn't be my choice for a first attempt.

Question is, Sense or not? There are a lot to choose from.

The root memory faq is important either way, as you'll want to increase storage somehow.

Yes what Hadron said.

...and we are happy to help and answer questions. We appreciate there is a lot to absorb. I'll be honest, you won't get it all in one sitting.

The thing is the info we have here is designed to give a level of knowledge rather that letting people blindly run through guides, which does happen a lot. Often these people have issues and cannot tell us what they have or have not done.

Kind of like you, receiving a device already rooted. You have no history of the process. You definitely do right to come here and attempt to tame the beast instead of simply giving up as many would.

Yeah, I know it's just repeating what the others have said, but it's worth repeating.

The key to this stuff is understanding what you are doing. Although most errors are fixable, you are interfering quite deeply with the device's software, so it's much better to avoid them. You can do that best if you understand the principles behind what you are doing. That's why we don't provide "follow this blindly" walkthroughs here - in practice they are asking for trouble down the line.

And understanding takes time and a bit of effort. There's no shame in that: I'm a long-term linux veteran with a PhD in physics, and I took months to work through this stuff. Thanks to the guides SUroot has written and the support of experienced forum members most people here progress much faster than that, but if you have to spend a few days reading, and a few weeks trying stuff out, before you have everything sorted, you will still be well ahead of the game.

But don't worry, it's worth it - the Desire is a cracking device, and you really can make it what you want it to be. And you don't have to learn it from scratch, we are here to help :)

Thank again guys I'm def going to do my homework first on everything before I keep messing with my phone I actually just ordered another phone for now until I can get this one up and going....

I even spent the last 2 hours trying to download a new rom and install it using rom manager but it just kept saying report error to rom manager on the recovery screen so I gave up lol I didn't want to partition the SD card just in case it messes something up and I brick my phone lol

But thanks a million for the help.once I do my homework some more and i try this again ill def be posting if I get stuck

thanks
