Root Help Rooting DHD running 2.2.3

johnagall

Newbie
Long story short my girlfriend water damaged her phone beyond repair so bought another used (but almost new) one from ebay.

I need to root the new phone so that I can restore her previous apps and settings using titanium backup.

Apparently the Visionary method that I used on her original phone doesn't work because the new phone is running android 2.2.3

Anyone done this and able to help?

Phone is in UK and on the Orange Network if that's relevant.

Firstly thanks for your response. It was indeed 2.3.3 :)

WOW that link seems quite complicated.

So in essence I need to downgrade the software to an older version so that I can run Titanium Backup? Are there any particular drawbacks in downgrading?

If I'm going to all of this trouble should Igo the whole hog and put a custom ROM on the phone? to be honest my girlfriend just requires stability in the phone as opposed to speed etc.

No problem!

The downgrade process looks a lot harder than it is, if you follow the commands, it's pretty simple.

You can root 2.3.3 with an app called Gingerbreak, if you have something called S-OFF. To check, turn the phone off, pull the battery, re insert, hold volume down and turn it on again. You'll see a white screen with 3 Androids on the bottom. At the top of the screen, it should say something like "ACE PVT ENG S-OFF". If it says S-ON, you have to downgrade to root.

If you downgrade, you might as well go the whole hog though. ;) There are a good few ROMs out there that offer a few performance increases over stock and are just as stable as (if not more so) than HTC's offering.

LeeDroid and ARHD are good examples.

Again thanks for such a quick response. Done the check and it says S-ON

So I am going to have to downgrade. Are there any down sides to downgrading?

In this scenario perhaps it is best if I downgrade, Root, install custom ROM and then restore her apps and date using Titanium backup? Or is that order of work incorrect?

There are no real downsides to downgrading, other than you're starting from scratch. If you've got the apps backed up though, it's no major issue.

Your order is kind of correct, the order of play is downgrade, temp root, root, S-OFF, ENG S-OFF, Install ROM Manager/clockwork, Install your custom ROM, then use TB to restore the apps.

The bits I added are really simple though and are only one click pieces of work and will take minutes. The downgrading is the hardest part. I've got a post here which gives you links to all the tools you need and how to use them. Then there's a post here which gives you instructions on how to install 2 of the most popular ROMs.

Like I say, it looks a lot, but it is very easy. :)

No problem, hope she appreciates it! ;)

Just post if you get stuck.

Make sure you have a pretty full battery when messing about in clockwork as even if the phone is plugged in, it won't charge. Likewise when you're flashing the radio as a bad radio flash can brick the phone (the radio flash is simple though).

I prefer my Samsung Galaxy S to be honest and find flashing that very simple. Using the most recent Darky ROM and its superb.

Sorry to be a bit off topic, but my wife has an SGS... was it easy to root? She's not really bothered to be honest, but I've been thinkin of doing it for a while, so I can get her on to Gingerbread.

How do you find the Keis software? I've found it to be a bit naff really - couldn't get it to install properly on the computer... which is why she is still on an older version of Android (think it's 2.1)

Phew...thats a relief. Was worried you'd say iPhone4 for a minute. ;)

Not a chance in this world my friend. I had a 3GS for less than 6 months and got sick of being told (indirectly) of what I can, can't, should and could do with the phone that I was paying a fortune for :D

I have no Axe to grind with Apple but if they think that they are going to charge me an arm and a leg to have my arms metaphorically tied behind my back they can get ***** :)

Doddle to Root - I used Z4 Root and it was literally one click. May I recommend the most recent Darky ROM too - it is lightening fast and great on the battery. HERE

DO NOT USE KIES FOR ANYTHING - it is truly awful in every sense of the word. You need to keep it on your pc when flashing though as you need the drivers (you may be able to uninstall Kies and still have the drivers but I keep kies just in case)

Once you have rooted I use the amazing Titanium Backup to save all apps and data and then went through the guide I linked to install the ROM.

IMPORTANT: Depending on whether you are flashing for the first time or not it is recommended that you only restore the apps (rather than apps and all user data) using Titanium.

So if you have any particular apps that you know require their user data then back this up separately. The one that springs to mind for me was the 'Easy Money' budgeting app. All the others could easily lose thier user data without too much trouble.

Hi I followed the instructions all the way and managed to install LeeDroid without a hitch (I Think) Perhaps you could check THIS screen shot and confirm that I am on the right Firmware?

A couple of questions though: I followed your method but when I installed the custom ROM I noticed there is no SuperUser permissions (ie the phone is unrooted) so I redid the visionary method (temp then perm root) to get the phone rooted again. Is this right? It has seemed to work and I'm now going to go ahead and restore apps and data from Titanium.

Lastly now that I have installed the LeeDroid Zip file, can I remove it from the SD card as it is a very big file and is taking up space for music etc.

Ok it's now very clear that I have not actually flashed the LeeDroid onto my phone.

I have tried a few times but when I chose the LeeDroid.zip file clockwork starts and then says flashing aborted very quickly after starting.

I downloaded the leedroid.zip ffrom the rapid share link at the top of THIS page and placed it on the root of the sd card.

Should I try another mirror to get the .zip file?

Also I'm concerned about the requirements that are listed on the xda forums website HERE for this ROM. Do I have the correct radio and is my memory card A2sd+?

Sorry for many questions.

Ok I know that I am rambling now but it seems that the Leedroid download from the rapidshare link I posted was dud.

Instead I downloaded the link from the XDA forum and this time it flashed ok with Clockwork. Superuser is available etc.

Here is the software information that confirms I'm on Lee Droid 3.3.3 I think???

My original question stands on whether I can now remove the LeeDroid .zip file from the root of the SD card. Can anybody advise?

Thanks in advance

Yeah, that's correct. The A2SD stuff I wouldn't bother about, there's enough space on the DHD to not need to worry. You can also move stuff to your SD Card manually if you run low.

Flashing a radio is potentially risky, but pretty easy, as long as you follow the instructions and make sure your battery is full, you'll be fine. There's a guide here or if you download the LeeDroid.zip in stublakes post stuck in this forum, I think it contains a tool which will do it for you. I did it manually though and it wasn't a problem. The correct radio you need is in Lee's post on XDA, underneath the kernel change log section.

The correct MD5 is 2dc4cfc01516d71c8d68ac2c5e2feda0 and relates to the radio.img itself as opposed to the zip file. You can check it with this tool.

Before you go for the Radio, did you get ENG S-OFF?

I did indeed get the ENG S Off.

Is there really any need to flash the radio? I'm not too bothered as everything is working well.

Sorry I didn't quite catch if I was able to delete the LeeDroid.zip file from my SD?

That's cos I didn't answer it, apologies :p. Yes, you can.

Flashing the radio isn't 100% mandatory, but it can have a negative impact on signal strength and battery life. I didn't do it initially though, and I didn't notice much of a problem. The devs do recommend it for a reason though.

One thing you'll need to do is recalibrate the battery. This post contains instructions on how to do so.

You can leave the radio, but if your battery life and signal strength is poor, then I'd go for it.

I'd do the battery calibration though, it's not risky at all. You don't even need to go into clockwork to do it, you can download this from the market and when the current widget gets reaches 0mAh, open the battery app, hit calibrate and let the battery run flat. Then charge as normal and you're sorted. :)

If you downloaded the LeeDroid pack from the link at the top of the page it is mine. However you need to open it as its a package containing everything you need including the walkthrough which would have told you that you were required to extract everything in it saving you clicking each individual link in the XDA thread. Those packs are not flashable. They contain everything in the code box that needs extracting to your SD card not just moving over. ;) Read the README contained inside and all would be revealed.

Ha ha what an idiot :)
