HELP! S4 or HTC ONE

I got the S4 for what it's worth but for the average user who doesn't root that 9GB storage is a huge put off.

I bought the S4 last month and I love it! I liked how fluid games like Asphalt, Dead Trigger and some random rpgs were. Another reason why I love it is because of its lightweight despite having a 5" display.
I have a friend who uses a HTC One and I have to say it looks brilliant sporting an aluminium body. Only thing that spoils the design is the two ugly big speakers at the front. Overall, he claims that it runs really well and it is very responsive.
In contrast, I think both phones depends on the user himself. Just buy whichever you think it's best.

I have the HTC One and think it's a great phone, I've had plenty of Samsungs as in the Galaxy S2, 3 and Note 2.
The battery life is ok and the Power Saver option is the best I've used.
You have to weigh up the cons with the HTC though which are a fixed battery and no expandable memory option.

i merged your thread into this one here, since it was already here.
both are great phones really. i am more familiar with htc phones, but the s4's feature seem pretty amazing. one thing i would do is spend some time in the various forums:
Samsung Galaxy S4 - Android Forums
HTC One - Android Forums
and see what issues people are having with the phone. also go out and actually play with them at whatever carrier you have and see how they feel in the hand. i think the htc one has a far superior build in that it is made out of metal and not plastic like the s4 is. htc phones have always felt better in my hand. samsung phones are light, but they just feel cheap to me IMO.
either way, i think you will be getting a really nice phone.
Root or not, it is a HUGE put off.

Good thing I fly on Delta which has TV, Movies, and Games in the back seat because on the 16 hour flight from Detroit to Japan flight, the movie with games left me with 12-13 hours of fiddling with my thumbs...

Can the battery really last that long?
Airplane mode and the "removable battery" that fanboys try to shove down everyone's throats will make it last that long.

Finally made a decision (only 5 months beyond contract expiry) and after an hour in the EE store yesterday comparing the 2, I bought a Galaxy S4 over the One. That ends my >10 year relationship with HTC phones. Or would, if they'd actually get round to transferring my number, so my Desire HD soldiers on till they finally switch!
It was the lack of a memory card slot or 64gb option that turned out to be the crunch for me, but it wasn't helped by the double data allowance on the S4 on 4G (despite not living in a 4G area.... silly, but apparently still cheaper than it would have been on 3G) and better discount over the One, and perhaps the potential to use with my Samsung Smart TV. The One still looked awesome and was less gimmicky than the S4 but I couldn't get past 32Gb hard limit, and the fact I've filled my 32Gb micro SD on my DHD. No card slot seems like a backward step by HTC and one I was hoping they would have reversed with the One.
I'm still not entirely sure I made the right decision though! I guess I've got a week to decide.... 2 annoyances at the moment are the headphone socket on top (dunno where it was on the One??) and the warnings that keep coming up telling you to avoid using it when charging when my battery is about to die (and the warning in the book telling you NOT to use it during charging or else risk electrocution. seriously?!?!). I mean surely I can still use the thing plugged in????
Anyway, those are probably questions for the S4 forum, which I'd better start looking at!!!

You can use it. It's just there in the manual so Samsung can deny obligation if something crazy happens. Most brands put that in nowadays.
I have been reading for a few days between these two devices and both are great. I am switching back from iOS to Android again with my iPhone 5. And want to know what would be the best way to go?

Unless you do things that are known to weaken batteries, like regularly run it flat, the battery should be fine for longer than that.

The Ones build quality mainly is the thing that appeals to me plus I have had a HTC before so know they produce good phones. Really tough decision for a big investment. Anyone got any more opinions on them both?
Another question I will purchase a sim free phone. If HTC/Samsung do ever updates their phones with the new android software would I be one of the first to get the updates because the phone won't be locked to any network thus not having to be distributed by the network?

Depends on some things. Some SIM free phones are still carrier locked. I remember back in my Nokia days that T-Mobile was selling SIM-unlocked devices in T-Mobile stores (not sure if this was Europe or US, it was said in a post in their forums). Despite being SIM-unlocked, these devices are still reliant on TMo for their updates.

So i'm on the lookout for a new phone. I'm going from the very crappy Galaxy Ace to either a HTC One or Samsung Galaxy S4. But i'm on the fence, because a few things are still unclear to me. First i'll mention why it's either gonna be a S4 or One.
S4 because i hear nothing but good things about it. Plus it apparently is full of features and a huge plus is that it has removable battery and an SD card slot. However the build quality is nowhere near that of HTC One.
HTC One because the build quality and design is really impressive. I read in lots of previews that the sound is amazing, so music should sound fantastic on it. Isn't nearly as feature-rich as Galaxy S4, but then...some reviews say there's so many features you really won't use anyway. Both are from what i hear incredibly fast. So that's good. But what is not yet clear to me is how the battery life of both are.
Some reviews talk about 8 hours when in heavy use, but i don't heavily use a phone at all. Most of the time it comes down to messasing alittle on Whatsapp, some browsing, Youtube, some calling and that's about it. Not in any way in constant use. But still i want to know how the batterylife is of both phones. My Samsung Galaxy Ace lasts 1,5 days with light/medium usage and with the brightness all the way down. It should be fine with either one.
And last question...which one would you prefer and especially....WHY?
