Root Help sought with Desire confusion

I'm stumped too, an. RUU should overwrite everything other than s-off. Unless you use the downgrade image first.

But flashing some RUUs, or just flashing radios, produces this symptom. And it's weird that there are 2 RUUs (both T-Mobile) which work, when others run but leave an unbootable phone, because there is nothing different about a T-Mobile handset, so no reason for a T-Mo RUU to be any different (as long as you can run it at all, which the revolutionary hboot sees to).

And why would just flashing a radio do this? OK, if you were using the T-Mo Eclair ROM (from the old RUU) with a more recent radio then I could imagine problems, but not with CM7. I must be missing something....

Perversely, I'm pleased that this mystifies people much more knowledgeable than myself.

I just tried to install 4ext into this new - still theoretically rooted device - running the above RUU. It said 'installation failed'. I tried CM recovery and that went on but when I tried to restore the backup I made earlier today it failed and then the phone got stuck in a boot loop at 'quietly brilliant'.

Re-installing the last working ruu again now...

OK. The RUU went on again. 4ext went on again (after installing busybox).

Booted into 4ext recovery and it says:

Attention: recovery is in safe mode because the following partition is not accessible: "system". Enter the wipe menu and format system! If you changed hboot you should choose to format all partitions (except recovery). Afterwards please reboot recovery.

Rather alarming, really...

Shall I do what the machine asks?

I seem to be running a perfectly decent install of CM7 on a phone with a working 5.11.05.27 radio which gives functioning gps and wifi - and no damn purple circle of t-mobile to bug me. In short, things look good!

lol, ok. Just interested to see if it's fixed. keep us updated. At least if you nandroid now, you know you have a good working rom. ;)

You can tell that Shauny's a hardened modder - "just flash a different ROM to see what happens" ;)

Good that it's working - right now I don't blame you for leaving it for tonight :D

Hmm, I'm too addled by work problems to really search my memory right now. Bizzare for sure - most bizzare might be an interesting competition :)

Thanks to all above for their helpful comments, advice and suggestions yesterday. I have a nicely working phone again now.

So: time to mess it up again.

I was thinking this morning that in order to get my phone into the state it was in I had systematically used almost every piece of contraindicated or slightly frowned upon piece of software going, i.e.:Rom Manager, Clockworkmod recovery, Mini tool partition wizard etc, etc.

The difference - the positive difference - between using CMR and 4ext is immediately apparent for me: the backup I'm currently running happily went on like a dream with 4ext where it utterly failed to go on with CMR ('failed to find image' etc, etc) - and it was a back up made with CMR!

Anyhow, today's challenges: there's just no space on this thing. I don't want a trillion apps on there but I do want some so I fear that I'm going to have to do that partition the sd card thing and use s2e. I'd also like to conquer my fear of the new and put the most up-to-date radio that's out there for this thing on - as per Hadron above.

I'm still interested in Oxygen because I gather that battery life is much improved with it - but I also gather that the S2E thing is only for Cyanogen and won't fly with Oxy so that's a problem maybe. Ideas anyone? MIUI maybe?

I'm concerned of course that any or all of the above tweaks will stumble at the hurdle of the thing's propensity to crash into the 7vibes of doom. I guess we'll see. Radio first, I think (after copious SD copies to pc and nandroid b/ups)...

O.K. Messing up has begun. Flashed radio 5.17.05.23 via fastboot - no problems. Rebooted bootloader to check it had it OK - it did. Reboot and...7 vibes of doom. :(

Time to put the RUU on again...

Well, yes, me too. But I also sort of don't mind: it's working, I have a phone with an improved radio features, I know I can probably sort the space issue with S2E -and that'll probably do for me. :o

i'd try flashing oxygen, if it don't work nandroid restore and quit whilst your ahead. ;)

S2E is CM only, but not needed with Oxygen as that functionality is built in. Partition the card, install Oxygen and it will just work.

If you want to move dalvik to sd with Oxygen there is a separate patch to flash, but you can do that later if wanted (nandroid, flash patch, wipe dalvik, reboot, done).

Edit: sorry, way too late! On TapaTalk and didn't spot there was another page of discussion!

I've got oxygen going - works fine, & I'm adapting to the new gui of the thing.

Now mucking about with Gparted trying to format an SD. I feel like a bull in a china shop, though.

Yep, thank you mate.

Still trying to sort out the SD card ext partition thang.

I do dimly recall a long-past life when I did things other than just fanny about with the intricate workings of a phone far cleverer than I am.
