Help Help! Sounds on my GN quit

Newbie
So, the other day, I miss a call. This morning, my alarm doesn't go off. I fool around with the phone and discover that all of the sounds are muted, even though a) It's not on airplane mode; b) The sound isn't muted; c) It's not on vibrate mode; and d) the volume control is all the way up.

I know that the speaker's working because I can hear phone calls fine. I tried rebooting the phone, toggling mute and airplane modes, all to no avail. I'm at my wit's end. Any ideas?

Thanks!

As long as you are not rooted, try performing a factory reset. This should install fresh system files on your phone. If system sounds are still gone, post back and let us know.

Note: Make sure you perform a backup of your phone before doing a factory reset so you don't lose anything important.

Ok, so I factory reset (man, it's gonna take awhile to recover from *that*), restored gmail and verizon accounts. Downloaded apps. Now back to ICS 4.0.4. Still no sound (except for phone - I can hear calls). Next?

If no one else here can offer any more troubleshooting tips, try calling Samsung tech support from a landline and see if they have any other solutions you can try: 1-800-726-7864

A little more troubleshooting and I discover all sounds available via the phone jack. Don't know if that means that the phone thinks the headphones are inserted all the time or what, but at any rate, neither I nor the Verizon guy can clear the problem, so we're declaring "Factory Defect!!!" and RMA'ing the device. I should get my new one in the mail tomorrow.

Just to close out the thread, got the phone the next day, as promised. Nice job VZW! I'm now more or less up, however I gotta say that Android backups leave a lot to be desired. The restore process is fragmented and incomplete on a non-rooted phone (yeah, titanium backup, blah, blah. Can't be bothered).
